Cosmic Mongoose
so then, following the recent tourney i was quite up for some more games. so I got my Abbai playing amigo to cycle to my house... and he used my EA against my minbos in a 3 war point slugfest.
EA - Warlock, 2 Omega, 2 Nova, 2 Hyperion
Minbari - Sharkaan, 3 Neshetaan, 2 Ashinta

Setting up diaganolly on my not quite largeenough kitchen table, the EA set up in a line of battle, wotking in fron Nova, to Hyperion, to Omega to Warlock. the Minbari setup with the 3 Nesh's in the centre, flanked by Ashintas, with the Sharkaan sat off in a corner.

T1 - the EA moved forward in a line, Novas first to get boresights on first my starboard Ashinta, and then the warlock beam o doom targetted my central Nesh. the Minbari had moved forward likewise in a similar line, but the sharkaan all stopped, it's long range beam able to hit anything but the Warlock. The Sharkaan targetted an Omega, whilts the neshs all targetted the second. The Ashintas were stil out of range. Conversely the EA Omageas both targetted the Ashinta. Some whomping shots from the Minbari took both Omeghas to the edge of a crippling, removeing special actions, and some AD in the process. In a stunning case of scanner functionality, every EA shot bar one (the TD beam, phew) saw it's target. one ashinta was badly damaged, and the Neshetaan thanked the lord it hadn't been a Shantavi as it soaked up ponuishment.

the net result of turn one was no dead ships, but several lost arcs, special actions and a few AD spread between the 4 targetted ships... the Minbari were worried, so many passed stealth checks, and the distance was closing

Turn 2, Minbari won initiative again, the Enemy continued to close, both Novas trying to get into the mix. the Minbari Nesh's and Sharkaan held their positions, the Ashintas to fill their arcs plunged bravely into the massed EA ranks. as the Nesh had all stopped so to did the dastardly warlock it's boresight assured. with the distance closed, and the memory of their superb sensor work fresh in their minds, the EA began to fail dismally every stealth roll bar 2, the Novas popped off a few shots, the second ashinta took a bit of a beating loosing it's port arc permanantly. in response the sharkaan tried to take out an omega, getting a 6-6 critical the thing set on fire and began to drigfty towards the combat zone, the other omega was crippled by nesh's but soldiered on. the EA fighters were beggining a long flanking maneuvre to get onto the Sharkaan.
turn 2 saw the first death, a flaming Omega, and a very charmed Ashinta seing 5 failed stealth rolls (at 4) against it!

T-3
somewhat frazzled at their poor anti stealth of the last turn, EA won initiative and prepared for a fresh onset. The ashinta was forced to move and began swinging towards the fighters, trying to taunt them into attacking it, the novas moved slowly forward to get in the mix with the Nesh's, the other ashinta flew between them, in a death or glory both broadsides blazing kind of way, the sharkaan finally came forward to target the warlock, which did likewise to boresight the mighty minbari flagship. the Hyperions and remaining Omega targetted the neshetaans. a flurry of fire, and again the EA stealth rolls were dismal, some secondary weapons penetrated stealth, and firing the omegas beam needing only a 2 to hit, a single dot on the dice summed up the EA luck, an ashinta managed to do 5 damage to a warlock before a nesh did 54 with a 6-6 crit, and the Sharkaan managed a futher 28, the Warlock was n o more, and shortly the Second omega exploded in a magnificent fireball, consuming a nearby Hyperion, which flew out of the other side with flame and debris bouncing off it's con tower.

as the dust cleared, the EA were now 3 ships down, the Minbari had a full fleet, but the 2 Ashintas were heavily damaged, and 2 neshetaans had taken some damage, indeed 2 of them had lost their port arcs and had no special actions, one ashinta had been crippled, loosing it's stealth, but retaining it's flight cimputer. The minbari moved in for the kill.

T-4 and 5
and here it began to go a little odd, EA winning initiative without their command bonus, the minbari ships suddenly had the enemy behind them and in trying to turn were left with secondaries only as they struggled to come about.. (i forgot i had agile on the nesh) with one Nova drifting serenely through the pack, 2 turns of mostly ineffectual Minbari fire were returned with interest from the Novas and Hyperions, we even had ass boresighting (thankfully he missed stealth on this one) and theEA fighters were now causing a nuisance, flying around, isolating minbari ships without antifighter support. one Hyperion did blow up, courtesy of another 6-6 crit, but by now, every Minbari ship had been hit, and 4 of them had lost their port arcs, it's true. could the remaining EA ships pull off a shock of stunning magnitude...

T6 -
no, basically, the Minbari stopped trying to come about in the sharkaan and brought their rear beam into play, and the one nesh able to do special actions had all stopped and pivoted. one Hyperion blew up almost immediatly, whilst the adrift nova was taken to 3 remaining damage. the other nova filled it's workign arcs and took out an Ashinta, and came within 2 points of destroying a Neshetaan before going out in a ball of fire and destruction... with the last hyperon now making a run for it to report back to earthdome, the 2 badly damaged neshetaans fiished their long turn and brought all weapons to bear, but it was not needed as the final minibeams of the Sharkaan finished it off.

final result, EA lost every ship, the Minbari lost only 1. a terrible spell of stealth rolling for the EA condemned them to a vetry unfortunate defeat, we both got as many hits as each other the difference was i got a lot of hefty damage hits, he didn't. the final result did skew the battle somewhat. I didn't have any ship bar the sharkaan with more than half damage left, but even tht had taken 27. An unlucky display from the plucky EA.
our next battle will "probably" be his Abbai (whom i fear greatly having lost 7 straight battles against them) versus Narn or centauri.

Good game.

As with every game ever against ACTA Minbari, it seems to devolve into the other player spending the entirety of his shooting phase just yelling "&$%£@$$ Stealth!!!!!!!!!" as ship after ship sits there like a lemon without firing.

Which if any of the special rules (new beams, redundancy, fires, web of death) are you using?

we used Triggys beam system, which made us laugh as we had more hits than the standard system! we didn't use any other "optionals". anynew offical rule was in place, even if we didn't use it :-) ie web of death, fusion missiles etc.

just been chatting, he wants to try EA again, against a non stealthy race, so next month will be EA versus Centauri.
we also are trying to get some one to play with his Dilgar for a few 3 ways (oo-err)

No scouts for the EA?

my fault really, I chose his fleet basedupon what i have, I gave him the option of dropping a ship for a scout, but he wasn't too fussed. I also only took Minbari at the death as my new Narn hadn't arrived in time to paint and base. i always feel a bit cheesy using Minbari, so future battles will only involve them if I go for an Army of light :-)

I haven't tried this myself yet, but a few Olympuses loaded with fusion missiles might help as well. A one-shot e-mine in a Skirmish level ship could annoy the Minbari ships, not to mention make a nice mess of their fighters. :)

Were those Neshatans really Veshatans? Because the Neshatan is War level, while the Veshatan is its Battle level variant. The statement "i forgot i had agile on the nesh" tends to confirm that they really were Veshatans because the Veshatan is agile and the Neshatan isn't. ;)

battle ones, otherwise i would have been cheating :-)

we actually discussed the fusion missile option on the olympus for future outings, i own 8 olympus so 2 squadrons could be made, giving a nice "ouch factor" to the minbari.
