I missed on on the original 2300 AD. Will I be okay just getting into the new version with no previous knowledge? I admit the alien name discussion was a little odd and didn't tell me much about the setting. It sounds really great, so much so I'm thinking about picking up the old PDFs. If the new books are good for a newbie to the setting, any suggestions on the old PDFs to pick up? Thanks!

Shouldn't be too hard to get into. It's mostly Traveller character generation, with a few extras like traits and DNA modifications. Combat, skill, everyone thing else works the same as Traveller.
We are in the process of repackaging and reediting some of the old adventures, so they will eventually be released, updated and with Mongoose 2300 AD stats.
