border boxes?

will there be border boxes produced with the 2500 line? I know the federation commander boxes had 24 ships in them and I thought it was said somewhere that similar boxes would be made for ACTA:SF. is this true?

I believe it's been mentioned that there will be border boxes but those will be sometime after the Kzinti and Gorn have been released as those some of those models are in the various border boxes.

Ok color me silly but I'm new to ACTA & SF (well played ACTA:B5 with the v1 box, all the cardboard counters etc)... but what is a "border box"?

Thanks

In the older Starline 2400 range, the original Squadron and Border Boxes were keyed to the various modules for ADB's Federation Commander. The contents of the 2400-series Squadron Boxes are intended to be identical to those in the 2500-series ones we are seeing now; while the same is supposed to be true for the Border Boxes, Mongoose have been doing up their own Fleet Boxes instead.

The main difference is that the Border Boxes are supposed to represent at least one of every ship in the FC module (and accompanying trio of Ship Card Booster Packs) it's tied to, and thus present ships from several empires at once; whereas Mongoose's Fleet Boxes are intended to cover a single empire only, with different ratios of particular ships offered in order to facilitate the operation of larger fleets.

(For example, one of the four Federation Commander modules that was drawn from to generate the ship list in the core rulebook for ACtA:SF was FC: Klingon Border; the Ship Cards in it, along with those exclusive to the three Booster Packs tied to it, are each represented in Border Box #1.)

Ok, thanks... I don't get where the term "border box" came from etc but I get your meaning.

Funny thing, I tried SFB back in "the day" (ready 1982) and that was a disater..
-given a fleet no explanation of the rules, told I'm playing "joe" first, and before I can bat an I joe already has his fleet set up... in a line across the middle of the map.. and is telling me to set up with him nose-to-nose. I walk out commenting "I guess the Federation stripped long range sensors out of all ships to save a few credits"

-Bought Fed commander when it came out - and the few people I could find interested in anything SF bitched about how lame it was compared to the game they already knew.

- Alas ACTA I welcome thee!

If one were to draw a Venn diagram showing how the player bases for SFB, FC, Starmada and ACtA:SF overlap, you'd likely find more than a few people into some, but who may not necessarily be overly keen to rush into any others; but even so, I would like to think that each circle of gamers would still be large enough for the various SFU tactical starship combat games involved to each succeed on their own terms.

(For FC in particular, I would note that it has evolved over the last several years; but it was never intended to be the same game as SFB. Although, in terms of game mechanics, it does lend itself to more of a direct comparison; since both systems are more closely related to each other than either are to the Starmada or A Call to Arms game engines.)

Since the Starline 2500 miniatures can be used for all of them, Border boxes can appeal to all groups.

You can get one if you collect one or two of the races in the box and swap the models you don't want for more models you do want.

I fully plan on getting rid of some Kzinti and getting some Tholians by doing this.
