Best way to start?

Mongoose
So after having put this game on pause, well mini gaming as a whole on pause, I find myself with time to play again and, while I love my Romulans, I think I want to collect another faction. I can always buy what ever i want for miniatures but I also have the problem of the fact that i need to introduce other players to this game if i want more opponents other than my brother and I also need to find a way to recommend starting up a faction now that the fleet boxes are no longer around.

what way did you find was a good way to start up a new faction with mostly usable minis?

Let's wait and see if there is some kind of new starter kit. Right now the only thing not coming back seems to be Fleet Box which means there probably will still be some kind of Squadron Box.

I recall that Steve Cole said that there was going to be a focus on something like a "Fleet Builder Box", and boxes with 3-6 ships in them.

There are still Fleet boxes out there, online, if you know where to look.

I can give you some leads if you want.

Arent there still fleet boxes on the mongoose site? ... After checking I dont see them, I could have sworn they were still available even a week or two ago, oh well. Even a lot of the squad boxes are gone, but I checked a week ago and they were on the store.

From what I've read on the FedCommander forums, I would like it if alot of Steve's ideas got through the ok with Mongoose. I would particularly like the starter box idea.

here's the weird thing, on ADB's web-store they still have the fleet boxes up, which would lead some one to believe that they have a few still in stock. But I would be more likely to believe that they might not.

Here's a couple of sources:

They still have some Fleet Boxes, depending on what Empire you want.

Stock levels appear to be okay, and they have GREAT prices. I have ordered from them once for X-Wing minis, and have no complaints about the company. I wish I had discovered them before I bought most of the minis I will ever need. :( I could have saved significant money.

Thanks! [paycheck, why are you coming in next week darn you!] I'm gonna see if they still have klingon and federation ones, if not i gotta go ebay hunting also. maybe people on barter town also are giving up collections, that's how I got most of my MI for the SST game.

ADB only lists what they physically have on the shelf to ship. So you have none of the "in stock" but doesn't ship for months nonsense I've gotten twice with ordering from Mongoose. If they are listed on the website, they do have them.

the war store also has some call to arms: star fleet models and a few fleet boxes in stock too. One thing I also find odd about the mongoose store is that individual dreadnoughts are not available any more either, I wonder what is happening.

another reason i need to consider ordering straight from ADB for my SFU stuff.

I usually order my SFU stuff, and all my mini stuff for that matter, through the warstore. I love them, being in the states and all, but i am pretty sure that they special order all their SFU stuff through ADB since my fed commander and prime directive stuff is always back ordered.

At this point there is no indication at all that anything new is coming out in the near future. Unless the OP is willing to wait until some time next year to actually get started, I would go with a pair of the current Squadron boxes in whichever to factions catch his fancy. As others have said, there are still Fleet boxes to be found which can be a very good deal, if the OP is willing to spend $300 to pick up two playable factions.

Have to agree here. Don't wait for Mongoose to release something else in the indefinite future. 2 empires are doable for less than $300, if you get 2 of those $85 Fleet boxes and some $9.99 singles to round out your fleets.

This is the exact reason why I didn't take the 'wait for starter box' suggestion very seriously, no offence intended Rambler, I had thought about picking up a couple squadron boxes except for the fact that Gorns do not have one unfortunately [for personal, not introduction fleets].

I am totally willing to drop 300 USD for two playable factions, I just quit Games Workshop systems, 300 USD won't even get me a proper start in warhammer or 40k nowadays.

@billclo, Can not thank you enough for those links by the way

That's the best way to put together a fair sized pair of fleets quickly if you've got the cash. I certainly can't find fault in your willingness to spend the money for two full fleets, as I have bought all five of the available fleet boxes, several squadron boxes and a number of singletons already.

If one of those factions is Federation, then the starter fleet box + singles of the new 'War-Class' vessels is a good way to go.

are you the guy with like 45,000 points of the game? I remember reading some one on here has that many.

I will totally keep that in mind

That would be Scoutdad; he's in a league of his own. I feel so inadequate with nearly 150 vessels, compared to what he has.

and now i feel bad with my 10 romulan ships...
oh well, i will be amending that later this week

Nothing wrong with collecting that many ships, I just wonder about using that many! I bet even if you had one of every different varient of federation ships form SFB, you might still have less than 150, I havent played SFB so I don't know how many varients there are, but I cant imagine there being THAT many.

It would still be cool though... one of every ship, duplicates of some that you'd be more likely to use more than one of.

I'd have to guess northwards of 1000+ ships and variants in SFB, EASILY.
