Best/most favored form of tournement

Folk;
I'll be running a tournement here in Colorado at the February convention. I've not decided on its format just yet and I would like to know what format of tourney others favor.

personally, I like escalation, starting at 5 skirmish, to 5 raid, to 5 battle, ships from each must be present in the next.

By now I prefer the "Battle on the Rim" Tournament Pack as it has fixed scenarios with a variety of goals to achieve.

I'm with Hiff on this one. It gives you a good feel for your fleet, though it limits some of the fleets, like Shadows & Vorlons.

Well, in that case, Shadows and Vorlons need to do well in the later games to stay competitive while fleets like the Gaim need to do really well early on to stay competitive...

Right now I don't think that the Gaim have a probelm staying competitive.

I prefer the escalating format. The KOTJ tourney's I've run have all used this format and my players almost univerally prefer it. Some fleets are very powerful at different PLs than others, so I think it gives a greater balance that if all the games were 5 raid.

There are a couple ways to do this though. You can have pre made lists for each round, or have 1 list that allows you to flex a little. I have my players draw up an 11 point raid PL list, and then they can select which ships they'd like for each round based on the race of the opponent they're fighting.
