If you have a level 0 skill from your homeworld background, and the same skill is part of your basic training, should it remain at level 0 or be increased to level 1?

I could beleive arguments for both possibilities, but it is not explicit or implicit in the rules.

See page 8 -- Skills and Training, Basic Training and the associated examples.

Since Basic Training implicitly gives Skill 0, it provides no increase to skills already at zero or higher.

This is how I understood ti as well. Places in the game where it just adds one to the skill level they do not list a number at all. Look at the skill charts for example.

Agreed, but as a house-rule, I allow two Zeros to equal a One. (My math teacher is turning over in her grave as I type this...)

Just say: "Trade two zero value skills for a single one value skill". That way the poor math teacher can RIP.

On a more serious note, I think this idea is not a bad one per say, but MGT already feels skill filled. Is this really needed? Do the players need another way to get leveled skills?

Just curious you thinking on the issue.

In my book 0+0=0.

The resoning is simple; Skill levels are supposed to reflect levels of learning, and accumulated knowledge will only increase when you learn something new.

My point here is that if you take a "beginners class" in Mathematics and learn all there is... you will not realy benefit from taking the same class again and again. You will just sustain and enforce the knowledge level you already had. To move further you would have to take the Advanced class and that would be "Mathematics" ... not "Mathematics 0".

Ok, now here is one I was asked and was unsure of:

If a person were to join the Marines and gain Gun Combat 1 as their Rank Zero Benifit, then later gain Gun Combat 1 as a Rank 1 Benifit, can they have Gun Combat 2 or must they take it as a seperate level 1 skill?

Gain Skill 1 always means "gain the skill at rank 1", never "increase the skill by one". As such, it would have to be taken as a new specialisation.

I thought that was how it was, but I wanted to be sure.

Thanks.
