(My bold/italics and note that the above page numbers are the pdf page numbers, not the page numbers at the bottom of each page when printed.)

Is there an un-explicit cap of 5 skills in the above? Or is it just a simple maths mistake? Either way, the paragraph should read as either:
Before embarking on your careers, you get a number of background skills equal to your Education DM+3 (1 to 5, depending on your Education score), chosen from the Homeworld and Education lists below. Characters with an Education DM of +3 may not acquire more than 5 skills from the Homeworld and Education lists below.
Or:
Before embarking on your careers, you get a number of background skills equal to your Education DM+3 (1 to 6, depending on your Education score), chosen from the Homeworld and Education lists below.
I think we should be told! ;)

It reads right to me. 2 + 3 is 5. I can only see a twelve EDU (+2) at the start of character generation. Adding three to the mod gives five.

Unless I'm missing something. I've been wrong before.

Good pick up. Grufty had me sold, but you are correct, +2 is the max bonus a character will have before his first career.

Yup, I made a mistake - I went by the Characteristic DM Table, which includes characteristics of 15+ with the +3 DM. Obviously any newly generated character can't have a characteristic of 15 straight off the dice   .... I'll shut up now, shall I?....<Hivers off into the darkness again......>

Yeah, but it'd need to be a +3 bonus and that would be huge. Sure it could happen, but I think you'd have to adjust the background skills anyway.

Any consolation, I thought the same thing. Doh.
