In addition remember The Gathering also wasn't that great of a movie. Compared to the later season, the pilot sucked. It seems that JMS needs some time to get fully into a new show, and then once he does BAM, awesome.
The big, bad aliens from LotR were nothing but a ruse, look how easy it was to trick them into getting what was coming to them. I bet they would have dropped that plotline real quick and got back into the Crusade plot. I must say that would have been interesting having a bunch of Rangers poking around in EA affairs. It certainly would have made for an interesting look at what the ISA was to become early on esp. in regards to the Rangers policing member races. Especially when the member race is one of the major powers like the EA.
