Ask MongooseMatt ANYTHING!!!

Emperor Mongoose
Summary of questions asked and @MongooseMatt's (or someone else officially with Mongoose)'s response to them:

1.
Is the MCr1 price of an emergency low berth in High Guard 2022 Update a typo? Previous editions call for KCr100.

[Status May 13, 2025: Answered]

[From @paltrysum: Not a typo as it has been MCr1 since Mongoose 2e in 2016 but as 1e and CT has it as KCr100 it might be updated.]

2. Will Mongoose consider using KCr, BCr, TCr, and commas ( or anything, really) separation to make large numbers readable?

[Status May 6, 2025: Answered]

[From @MongooseMatt: They are considering KCr and BCr may have already been used.]

3. Why persist with a hydrogen filled jump bubble when: 1. it is based on very dodgy fanon and 2. it is contradicted by collectors and batteries in both the setting and the High Guard rules themselves.

[Status May 10, 2025: Answered]

[From @MongooseMatt: Mongoose wishes to leave these details up to referees without further clarification.]

4. Are single occupancy staterooms the default in Mongoose Traveller or double occupancy? Do the leaders (officers) go single or are they also double occupancy?

[Status May 10, 2025: Answered]

[From @MongooseMatt: There is no default assumption for staterooms. Some high ranking officers will be in singles (captain, executive officer, chief engineer?) and the rest will double up.]

5. Regarding the Telepath or Clairvoyance Psionic powers:

Can a Telepath or Clairvoyant project an image into a mechanical device?

[Status May12, 2025: Answered]

[From @MongooseMatt: As it stands, no. However, it is not beyond the possible that someone, somewhere in Charted Space, has figured out how to do this.]

Okay, not really anything, but when we post questions about the rules or potential typos in the feedback area, we often don't receive a response, so I'm creating this thread in the hopes of getting some response to questions we have, even if it is "we're looking at that" or some such.

I'll kick this off with a question I posted a few days ago. The emergency low berths in High Guard 2022 Update are listed at MC1 a pop. Seems real pricy since Mongoose 1e and all the previous versions of Traveller we checked had it being KCr100. In Mongoose 1e, it was listed as MCr.1 and we suspect a typo. Can we get some clartity on that so we can update the starship build sheet to reflect what we suspect if we're right? Thanks.

Also, allow me to suggest that adding KCr, BCr (or GCr to please @Geir), and TCr to your repertoire would be really helpful and would minimize the complaints about not having comma separation in your big numbers, too.

And sorry for all the wild AMA questions you're about to get @MongooseMatt. ;)

With their bots, it could be a one night stand.

Thank you! I reverse image searched it but couldn't find it!

Matt,
When a psion is in an area with a psionic shield or attempts to use a talent against someone wearing a shield, how does the psion perceive the shield?
- Is it an area of 'static' that scrambles powers?
- Is it just null spot, a 'blank' on the map so to speak?
- Or do their powers just not work?

Followup: is the psion aware of the shield just by being in the vicinity, or do they have to attempt psioning to detect it?

On the subject of Psionics,

If a Character has Psionics and their careers are over, is there a way to improve Psionic Strength during game play (other than drugs and/or Implants)? On the same note, can you learn and/or improve Psionic Talents?

The powers certainly do not work, but the perception of the shield may vary between psions - so, your call! However, they will most likely have to try something to notice a shield.

PSI cannot be increased by normal means, but talents themselves are the same as skills and can be raised the same way through training.

I have always ruled that a psi screen acts like a camouflage/thermal/stealth cloak - you blend into the background noise so the psion doesn't notice.

To my thinking it has to be this way otherwise the psion can scan an area and notice the blank spots, or the big fuzzy waves or whatever, that say "here is a psi shield".

Situation 1 - a psion is scanning a warehouse, five goons are wearing psi shields, the psion doesn't notice them, the party continues to break into said warefhouse

Situation 2 - a psion is scanning a warehouse, five goons are wearing psi shields, the psion notices the blank spots and tells the party there are 5 psi shielded individuals inside, the party continues to break into said warehouse but with more guns.

I suppose it depends on how powerful you want psionics to be at your table.

Thanks for the clarification.

Head to Zhodani space or go get friendly with the Droyne.

Both have means to raise Psi during prior history so there must be a way to raise Psi like any other characteristic - thinking back to CT Experience you would dedicate a 4 year study to temporarily raise it by 1, continue into the next 4 year training period and the +1 is now permanent, and your Psi is now +2 compared to where you were a four years ago.

New talents are also something that can be learned during your prior career so they should be able to be learned during Experience too.

Situation 1 would make sense as they couldn't be detected with Life Detection.

Situation 2 - If you could notice that they were "dead zones" then you are detecting them without detecting them, so that would kind of defeat the purpose of a PSI Shield.

I have always ruled that you do not sense the Psi Shield until you try to affect the person with the Psi Shield.
Remember that psions automatically count as "shielded" unless they lower their shield to permit contact, so your Telepathy powers may not be able to tell the difference between a psion and someone wearing a psi-shield. Non-telepathy powers, of course, will work differently.

Edit - I am actually building a religious order that PSI-tests all of its "clergy", so every one of them has a PSI score, but no powers or opened Talents.
