Are Narns or Centauri a good fleet for a beginner?

You should chant "Illaros!", the Centauri goddess of luck, very appropriate after all

Remember to Chant "Maximus!" when rolling the dice ! Until of course your oopoent tells you to shut up - - even if mine were tollerant!

Dude! With all these talk, I'm a bit weirded out by the Centauri.

Still, it's all good. Nothing like enthusiasm to get into character :)

I've checked the rulebook and came up with a 5 pt. raid fleet.

1 Primus

4 Maximus

2 Vorchan

Primus stays back and just blasts away while the Maximus, squadroned in twos, closes in for the kill. Meanwhile, the Vorchans will hit the flanks.

An alternate list:

1 Primus

2 Sullusts

6 Corvans

Primus hangs back blasting away at incoming ships while the Sullusts provide additional support. They will inexorably close in while the Corvans lurk about and when the time comes, hit the opponent's flanks.

Also, is a Raid fleet the default fleet list or should I get more ships? (Dargans and Altarians really look cool!)

Really curious about the Narn bat squad, though.
Wish i could get 6 corvans for a patrol but alas it is only 3, 6 havens might be worth a patrol point. Advice " never take a Haven " currents stats mean they die because of only having 6 crew.

Ok... even I'm not that big of a B5 nerd ( )... but where was THAT mentioned?

 well I am that big of a B5 Nerd! It was in "Survivors" in season 1 iirc. Garibaldi gets money off Londo who tells him about his "long and dubious relationship with Illaros the goddess of luck and patron of gamblers"

Alright, just made up the Narn's 5 point Raid fleet. Perfect villains for my future Centauri admiral.

1 Varnic

2 Ka'tocs

2 Shokars

2 Gkariths

Alternate:

1 Varnic

6 Katocs

or

4 Katocs

2 Gkarith's

The alternate seems to be a fun but nasty list, but seems to sacrifice a bit of flexibilty. Not quite sure if its a wise idea, though.

Thanks!

Any justification on these choices? the Var'nic cannot go head to head with a Primus, the G'Quan can't really, but it will last long enough in most cases to get in close and use it's secondaries and maybe some ship busters :-)

Weirded out? The Centauri have the nicest ships, the coolest characters, the best plotlines and the best quotes eg "what are those earth creatures called? beaks, webbed feet, go quack?" "err Cats?" "yes cats, I feel like I'm being nibbled to death by cats!"

Raid level is the most popular and most tournaments play at that level.

Your first list is short on firepower. The second is better.

My tournament list evolved from 1 Primus, 4 Vorchans plus sentris (did quite well came 4th) to 1 Tertius, 1 Prefect, 1 Balvarin, 2 Vorchans (didn't do well) to my most recent 1 Primus, 1 Centurion, 1 Sulust, 1 Altarian (was excellent and came second).
I'm not too keen on the skirmish level ships they lack firepower compared to the Narn equivalents. Raid is the Centauri strong suit.

I agree, not a good selection really to test the Centauri with. Especially the first choice.

5 point raid, I would go for something like:

1 x G'Quan
2 x Thentus - the twin links here will really help irrespective of weak
2 x Ka'Toc
2 x Ka'Tan

I would even consider 2 x Rothan's instead of the G'Quan. Should give ya more a fight.

For the Centauri you have a really nice selection available to you - Prefect's, Sulusts, etc. I would even consider not taking a Primus at all in favour of more raid ships.

No you should take a G'quan (or other e-mine ship). Plus as many fighter carriers as possible. e-mines will kill centauri fighters allowing your frazis (with a healthy 4ADs each) to get behind Centauri ships (usually safe) and chip away.
Plus ionic burst e-mines will prevent any Concentrate All Firepower! battle lasers from mauling you.

For the Centauri, always take a Primus, big, intimidating, tough and carries fighters

(Not Serious suggestion)

Give the Vorchan the Maximus stats and say that Maximus is actually the Earthforce code name for it - like Allies did with Soveit planes etc!

Job done - Vorchan looks much better and is as good as the MAXIMUS!!!

Iron Panda - you think I am wierd and have not met me - accurate statement!
