Are fighters worth it?

Mainly it just means it is not a breaching pod, so it does not get automatically ganked by an enemy fighter in a dogfight.

Not so, Breaching Pods have the Breaching Pods Special Rule in their stats, Fighters have Fighter

FIghters are subkject to the special rules that apply to fighters, similarly for breaching pods.

It's all in the rules

My Vorlon fighters are good for rolling up on small ships and shredding them apart with hits & crits before they can open up with antifighter defense. My backup fleet is Drakh: i'll argue the LR and HR aren't fighters, but if you want to hear a brick hit the floor, try 5 Points of War with only LR and HR counters! (I threatened our resident EA player with it, it's they only time I've seen him flinch in the face of a game!)

personally i like the ISA with Minbari allies for fighter heavy tactics. With access to the starfury, t-bolt, and nail. the ISA have some of the best fighters around. The WS fighter looks good to (as long as you get them by way of the WS carrier), but i haven't really gotten to use them much.

Of coarse if you really like fighters you could try to convince your group to try out the star wars mod.

I have always found Vorlon and Shadow fighters are anhliated by opposing fighters
If you go into dogfight, yes... ;)
Vorlon fighters weapons have AF for a reason :D
Shadow Fighters are just there to hold WS Fighters still really, so that the Scouts can kill them after the dogfight.

Volrons never seem to have a enough movement to keep out of the way - esp against ISA / Minbari - only seem them use their AF gun against one of my centauri - after my Razik had killed the Vorlon one it had fought.

Shadow fighters are a joke

Vorlon fighters are vulnerale to other races fighters. It comes down to the initiative: if I win, and my fighters are back, I make you move first. You can close in and face antifighter beams, or stay back and do nothing. Then I move up and swarm the closest ship, since I like to take the Vorlons right into the enemy and my fighters fly close support. Then I shoot first and make things go boom. I think I lost more fighters to explosions than enemy fire last game.

i did that recently as well with a full compliment of Poseidons fighters swarming an Omega, somehow i only got 2 of those fighters back

If you lose initiative, keep your Vorlon fighters in support of your capital ships. Anyone coming in to dogfight you will get fried by the charged energy pulse. If you win initiative, move your fighters into sniping range (but not dogfight) of his fighters.

Problem with vorlon fighters is the low speed/bad dodge combo - if you're trying to avoid dogfights, you need to keep your fighters attached to a Transport, as it will dissuade most anyone from coming close to them (assuming you force them to move first) - although obviously Thunderbolts could still quite happily engage them with shooting without fear of reprisals. Problems arise when your destroyer or transport has to APTE, however (which is quite often, especially for transports in order to keep them remotely near to being in range) - the fighters can't keep up.

Also, there's nothing to stop most anyone just throwing long range AD at your fighters. Their poor dodge makes them go poof quite easily.

A friend of mine at my local store used my ISA with Whitestar fighters and I used my shadows....I destroyed all of his ships and left four of his whitestar fighters flying around. They continuously out classed my shadow ship and I eventually had to leave normal space to end the scenario and avoid them picking off my Shadow. I won and it was a good strategy that I had to utilize, the old hit and run scenario, and only gave him half my points. I got four points for his whitestar fighters that I destroyed in the first turn and all the points from his Whitestar Gunship and Carrier. So in other words yes they are worth it.

I wouldn't call a game involving a WS Gunship, a good benchmark! It is a useless heap of junk.

not in 2e it won't be!!!
I'm talking about the present not the future.

i know but i was just pointing out that it is one of those ships which is worthless now but in 6(ish!) months when 2e comes out it will be a very viable choice

you know, I keep hearing what a useless piece of junk the WS gunship is, from 2 rounds of firing it destroyed 2 Drakh light cruisers, a light raider, heavy raider and a scout (it also blew a Morshin in an explosion but we don't talk about that!)

now any ship that can do that, can't be all bad surely?

I think its not useless but too high priced - like the Liati - they are good ships but at Battle level................
