Apollo 11 & Buzz Aldrin interview UFO filmed by crew

DFW

Mongoose
This video shot by the astronauts has a very interesting shaped craft. Might design a ship based on it.

My father-in-law (O6 USAF) who worked on all the Apollo projects 1st told me of this one years ago but I hadn't seen the film until recently.

N.B. Far trader shouldn't watch this.

Interesting. I counter with:

In which Buzz Aldrin explains the oddly shaped object as one of the four shroud panels that protected the LEM during ascent.

Unfortunately, this report was LONG before the separation of the lunar & command modules. If you rewatch the 1st clip you'll notice that the 2nd stage was only 6k miles behind the astronauts. The separation & adjustment of the command & lunar takes place MUCH later in the mission.

God, I love having a relative who was a high ranking NASA member during that time.

Errmmmm, the S-IVB contains the Lunar Module and the Command/Service Module. If the S-IVB (which they ask Mission Control about) had separated 2 days ago (according to the video narration) and Mission Control confirm it's 6K miles away, they'd have quite a bit of a problem if "...separation & adjustment of the command & lunar takes place MUCH later in the mission." I'm not sure where you got that idea from, but the mission would have been stuffed if that was the case.

Watch the 1st clip again. They had just done a burn. (increasing their velocity).

A quick test. After a burn, do objects you have separated from obtain the same velocity as the craft that just "burned"?

This is an easy one...

That 5-minute burn he was talking about was the TLI (Trans-lunar injection) burn, and the S-IVB actually makes that burn. The LM is extracted very soon afterwards (an hour or so).

Or were you talking about a different burn?

(For the record, I don't have a dog in this hunt.)

DFW - Please go peddle your paranoid conspiracy nonsense on one of the many boards that the kooks and crazies use.

This garbage has nothing to do with Traveller.

I like you. You can stay

Could the mods kindly ban this moron? I want to talk about Traveller and other Mongoose games here. If I wanted to bang my head against the wall trying to talk sense to a UFO-kook, New Ager, conspiracy theorist, cryptozoology fan, theist, or other related whack job, I'll go to the JREF forums.

If we start banning people for stupidity, soon there would be no one left on the forum.
I'll settle for maintaining civility and exercise self control to avoid silly topics (like this).

I'll just point out that a thread can be killed by totally ignoring it, rather than posting to it with complaints about its content...

Actually, I thought the initial thread opening post was fine. :)

He saw a video and wanted to make a ship based on the image.

What would that have to do with Traveller? Well since even according to OTU, there were other space going races before Man left Earth, maybe he is going to do some future history (or have an adventure based on some from eons ago).

After that first post, I think others helped drag this thread down as much as DFW did in replying to those comments.

Since Traveller (and almost any other science fiction roleplaying
game) is based upon the assumption that aliens do exist and in-
cludes to pretend that they do, some of the reactions to this and
the other "UFO thread" indeed seem a bit over the top.

I would like to see DFW's ufo design, although I do not subscribe
to the view that there is evidence for extraterrestrial contacts in
the real world - but Traveller certainly is not about the real world.

Paranoid UFO conspiracy theories are not relevant to Traveller, and the OP has a habit of posting crap like this (he posted two such topics in rapid succession). Ironic given that he spends a lot of time insulting peoples' education and having "there is no saving throw vs stupidity" in his sig ;).

UFO theories can be part of Traveller quite easily.

They can give rise to adventure situations such as "intrepid adventurers stumble across unexplainable 'evidence' of aliens." The adventure is to find the actual truth behind this 'evidence'. And maybe there really were aliens.... like an Ancient's agent that got filmed or left behind magic-tech by accident ( or on purpose as a form of manipulation...surely you don't think Hivers are the only ones that wear that hat, didja? )

Also, for every human race except Terrans, "Chariots of the Gods" is closer to the truth of their racial origins than our own mundane evolution. Same for the various Vargr groups.

Or perhaps the reactions to this video gives us a decent model on how the inhabitants of a low-tech world might react to being surveyed without contact by the IISS of the Imperium....

Generally? Sure. But it's disingenuous to pretend that a "documentary" clip with spooky music playing over it while an Apollo 11 astronaut talks about something odd that he saw while on the way to the moon has absolutely anything to do with Traveller.

As it is, the narrator says that the object shown in the clip was actually video'd on a later mission. That alone implies that if it's something that both Apollo 11 saw and that was also seen on a later mission, then it's far more likely some debris related to the launch vehicles and not "alien spaceships" or anything else unusual. Anyone with a modicum of basic critical thinking skills should be able to see that.

If the OP really wanted to talk about "UFOs" and how they may be relevant to Traveller, he could have easily done so without an Apollo 11 connection at all. (it's not like there's even anything there to base a Traveller design on anyway. It's a couple of blobby shapes, is all).

^

In Traveller, Ancient Astronauts and aliens and FTL are all established and fine, but posting about RL cases of UFO sightings, whilst seemingly taken out of context of the OP, was just what everyone trolled in the past needed to see from DFW.

And twice in a row too - jeez DFW...
I'd say it was a dare he was put to, or a lost bet, but they havent even posted a response to confirm even that.
