Anyone want to do a group Legend project?

Mage

Mongoose
Like the title says, does anyone want to do a group project for Legend. It could be a co-operative thing here on the forum.

I like the idea of doing an 'Arabian Night's Legend if anyone wants to join together to do such a thing.

What I was thinking was something like the Hawkmoon supplement for MRQ1, where basically an updated rules set with the setting-specific additions are included (character classes, professions) or something along those lines.

So basically a set of sections covering:
Character Creation
Gazetteer
Skills
Equipment
Combat
Adventuring
Sorcery

I guess the standard equipment from Legend and A&E of Legend would deal with the Equipment section. Any specific armour or weapon types that aren't currently covered?
I can't see much different that needs to be done for combat. What sort of extra skills might be needed, the archetypical storytelling of Scheherazade is already covered?

A gazetteer covering Islamic empires from Spain to the Spice Islands and southern Russia to Madagascar.

A set of combat styles for various types of adventurers, presumably Frankish, African. Islamic, Indian, and Chinese.

Sorcery/Magic will be the big chunk I think. Demon/Djinn summoning will be a must and I think Alchemy will be big but probably not a PC skill. Enchantment will be something that will be needed for magic carpets and genie containing lamps, but I think that rules for binding a demon into an object are already available - possibly not as OGL though.

Not too sure what would need to be done with armour/weapons/skills/equipment, more detail and some modifications I guess? That's what coming together for the project would be all about sure. Magic would be a major thing, as well as monsters, scenarios, stuff like that, maybe the bones of a setting.

Merrie England has some information on Djinni and Alchemy which I can easily provide.

Weapons should be fairly eassy - scimitars, curved daggers, composite bows, some spears and pikes for guards, various kinds of ringmail and helmets with points on. Silk should be discussed and given special properties.

Magic - Sorcery for NPCs, Islam for PCs/NPCs, Christianity for wicked NPCs (according to the 1001 Nights). Islam figures fairly highly in the tales, but not in an overt fashion, so Islamic Blessings shouldn't be very important to the game.

Character Generation - This should cover the different areas of the Islamic Empire, especially Iraq, Persia, Egypt and Northern Africa, as well as having a Chinese Background. Depending on which era is covered, this might include a Turkic background, but that was generally later than the normal 1001 Nights period. professions should be tailored to the ones normally found in the stories, so merchants, sailors, alchemists, magicians, thieves and beggars are absolutely required.

The Bestiary should include the fantastic creatures from the stories, including the Roc, of course.

I wouldn't include the entire core rules, otherwise the page count will be horrendous, especially if it uses the same, or similar, sized books to the Legend core. We would probably have to include some core rules, though, to complement the background.

I'm interested in collaborating in a Fantasy Project. I am not all that keen on pseudo-historical setting but each to their own. :)

I have about 25 pages ready of my Sandbox project that I want to make available soon.

I'd have to agree with Doc Warlock on not doing pseudo history, it isn't really appealing to me, and I'd rather not touch christianity or islam as a 'cult' or magic system. I'd more prefer a Psuedo Fantasy.

Well, to get the ball rolling, here is the sign up list:

Mage
Prime_Evil

Please confirm your commitment with another post with same, I included Prim_Evil as he said 'Count me in' and other posted something along the lines of 'I'd love to' but weren't more definitive. I'm not trying to be pedantic, I just don't want to sign up people without the all clear. Thanks!

I'm definitely in!

I think we need to probably be quite upfront about our own strengths and weaknesses here, so as to avoid any potential overlaps that may occur. For example, I am fairly new at Legend/RQ so rules/systems are probably not my strong point.

Also, probably need to get some ideas going of what we want to include and what we want to leave out. My vote would be for something with a Dark-Fantasy flavour, using authors like Gemmell and Erickson for inspiration, as an example. Perhaps create a separate forum ...

... I'm a Project Manager irl! :)

Really excited, actually!

Well, including myself we have four on board, that seems like a strong enough core group to start with:

Mage
Prime_Evil
Old Timer
warlock1971

I suppose we should cleear a few things up like warlock1971 said.

I have GMed a few percentile system campaigns: Call of Cthulhu and several Runequest ones. I have put together scenarios, own various different books, created my own monsters and world, as well as having done some work for a Transformers, Superheroes and modern RQ vol 1 variants that I never finished. I have dabbled in Runequest 2 a little, but more of my books are from MRQ1. I do not own a copy of Legend, yet, as I will pick up a copy for this project.

I have no problem doing ground work, as I lack discipline for a managing or planning role.

I have been familiarizing myself with Legend, the last few months. I own the rule book, monsters, skarr, vikings, arms of legend and arcania.

I am crap at map making but I'm a grafter so don't mind typing and researching, etc. I really love the simple elegance of the rules and starting to feel comfortable using them ...

Anyways, PM me and we can start to chat.

I think you should define your goals more clearly Mage, exactly what background and what period and what degree of fantasy/reality, then define what roles you require and assign them to those who indicate an aptitude or enthusiasm.

PM warlock1971, as a project manager he will be able to advise you on how to structure your aims and what to request from those who wish to participate.
Start a private wiki and see what contributions you get.

Otherwise you will get numerous "I don't fancy that idea", "I'd rather do this thing" responses.

Good luck on the project, I may even jump in if I get the chance and the time :)

Matt.

Thanks for the pointer, hope you come on board some time :D

Well if I can help in any way, shape or form please call.

For my two cents worth - have any of you "main GMs" got the "Tales of the Arabian Nights" board game? I think some of the stories and ideas in there could be well utilized in this setting.

Hey Bifford,

Thanks for that piece of information. If you were to involve yourself in the project, what would your strengths/weaknesses be in working on it? Would you be more a rules checker, playtester, rules writer, etc?

Ok, bit about me for this project. I have ran just about all d100 based systems, so i feel know them well. Nearly all fantasy games i run are home brew, simple because i enjoy doing that, so i have no problem creating cultures/societies/cults/orders and even my own races. I also like to put my own spin on fantasy races, and generally try to avoid the standard clichés of any race unless there is a very good reason for them.
I am just about happy to be involved in any creative process for this, though the above are the 'bits' i am best at.

Ah, so your a background buff and creative type? Very good! I guess we could do our own pseudo-earth 'Arabian' fantasy world. Cool.

On a side note, I think I would have very interesting conversation with you on homebrew worlds, as I am working on my own RQ one at the moment, not related to this.
