In my groups, Stormbull has always been a favorite. Yet now that they are shamins, that has gone away. Either suck at your magic, or be a naked berzerker, which seems to make for a short career.

Perhaps it make sense in a themistic way, but it has not proven out a very good thing to play.

Any thoughts?

I haven't used the various cults books since I've started playing MRQ [my campaign being a GodLearner-based one] but if I recall correctly you should be able to emulate RQ2/RQ3 Storm Bulls by using the Urox cult.

Yes, Urox is the Theist/Orlanthi aspect and Storm Bull is the Spirit/Praxian aspect of everyones favorite chaos killing beserker.

So technically which version of the cult you use should be determined by your background - though if you find one works better than the other go with it.

What makes the Spirit version worse than the Theist Version? Just curious as both now have their ability at magic defined by a skill - Lore(Specific Theology) for Theists and Summoning for Spirit Magic.

So far, the more powerful divine spells, ( I just about cant say that, I always say runemagic for divine-old habits die very hard) seem to be better than the spirit ones.

Rune and divine are not effected by encumbrance, where as spirit is. Unless I have onnce again missed something. A plate equipt ax wielder is down 14% casting vs a divine caster. With the limited number of improvement rolls, that is not likely to close.

I have had a number of Shamans over the years and they all want to run around in bikinis, and make others carry thier packs. Weapons and armor are going to make that so much worse.

OTOH, it looks like you have to pay every time you renew a spell, so that is a definite downer. Unless a game is more money heavy than I am used to, this could be a serious problem.

Rune Magic is definately affected by the Armor Penalty, which is actually worse than encumbrance. I'm pretty sure Divine and Sorcery are too - it was much discussed when the Companion came out whether Armor Penalty applied to those types of magic and I beleive it does - though maybe this was never concerned. Hopefully Deluxe RQ will be definative on this.

Either way, Spirit Magic has many RQ3 elements left over in it - ENC as a penalty being one of them. I use Armor Penalty instead to make it the same as other types of magic in MRQ.

I will be so happy when deluxe comes out. by the time I went to get the companion, all my FLGS had was one with the cover on backwards. I thought it would drive me crazy.

Then, when they realized that deluxe was comeing out, they did not reorder any. So I have just been useing the SRD until it gets here.

If I could make a suggestion . In Elric thats a hero skill (4 points)called armored Titan which reduces the penalty for armor by 20%. Although its seem to be written with combat in mind there no reason I see not to have it also effect spell casting. you can look also for other hero abilties or even make your own up to reduce the penalties for casting in armor.

I have no problem with the naked odd guy or gal with a bone in the nose and tatoos everywhere as a Shaman. In fact, one of the things I did like about RQ3 was that they made an effort to make shamans unique.

MRQ has continued that, and I still like it a lot. I just had a problem with a near naked berzerker. Well, actualy I dont even have a problem with that, just the long term survivability of such a person.

I have come to realize that I have an insuficient handle on things do to my use of the SRD. I desperately need to get ahold of the RQ deluxe book as soon as possible.. I even have the money ready to go.

Now if it gets published on time, and gets shipped to the US in a resonable amount of time, maybe I can find a way out of this.
