Another Ships of the Galaxy question!

Earth Alliance - Warlock
I always thought the main weapons were the twin Heavy Particle Cannons (and they certainly are in ACTA & B5W); however the entry in the Guide lists the HPC as a single close range Offence 27 weapon. Not quite what I was expecting :shock:

I also took a look in the Shipbuilding Guide but there was only an entry for a Drazi HPC, nothing for the Earth version.

Any chance of an update to give the Warlock its bite back?

That book was being written at the same time as we were working on the 2nd ed rulebook, so ALOT of the ships in that book were altered AFTER the manuscript was turned in. I cannot say why some things got changed, not because of secrecy - simply because I do not know what took place after I turned in the manuscript during the rules-adjusting.

There are several weapon listings that got altered, and the HPC was rules-wise the same as the Drazi one. That is what I would suggest using.

Sorry for all the inconveniences with that book, I wish I could have written it after the rules were finished, but for timing we could not. Nature of the beast, I suppose.

Normally there are preview pages of the books online at the main page. Are there any chances of seeing some for the Ships of the Galaxy book, just to get a visual of things for those of us where the FLGS don't carry the line

Bry, far be it from me to argue with an author of your stature :wink: ... but ... the Drazi ones are not up to the job!

Drazi HPC: Close, Off 27 Beam 1d6 - Heavy Laser: Long Off 30 Beam 1d6
The Drazi weapon is almost the equivalent of a Heavy Laser, but with shorter range. So why would the Warlock mount them instead of lasers?

I was expecting something along the lines of Long, Offence 70, Beam 2d6, maybe slow loading and costing about 1.5 million cr.

A quick twin-linking into a single weapon system and it should do the trick. Maybe it would look better as:

Twin-Linked Heavy Particle Cannons (Close, Offence 41, Beam 1d6)

I dunno, you might even use something as powerful as you said in your post, but Beam dice are a huge benefit for all those secondary weapons. That's why you don't see really huge Offences on Beam weapons except in the cases of ultra-high science (Minbari, Vorlon, etc.).

But again, it is your game, so you should find the good medium place for you. You don't want your gun to kill every ship it fires at, otherwise you will never have starship combats longer than a turn, y'know?

Bry, thanks for the quick reply (as always) - the Drazi twin HPC does look a lot better but I was lookng for something that is superior to the Heavy Laser so it would be a logical choice for the No1 EF warship (in the current game time) so I was thinking of :-
EF Twin Heavy Particle Cannon (Long, Offence 105, Beam 1d6) I cut the Beam by a 1d6 - you were right, it was too much.

That will do for me unless Mongoose is going to bring out something offical in a new book, scenario etc or someone else comes up with a better idea
