Anne McCaffrey Has Died - GalleyCat
Not all readers here on these fora may acknowledge Anne's contributions to the fantasy and SF genres. But Anne wrote some pretty epic stories - the Crystal Singers, the two The Ship That Sang novels, fourteen Pern novels - so, as some Usarians might be wont to say, "that ain't no chump change."
Writers like Anne McCaffrey kept the flames of SF and fantasy alive at the darkest time in its history, the Seventies, where the genres were just dying on their feet for want of talent.
They kept the spark of life going until Star Wars and Superman fanned the flames with the oxygen of fandom from a whole new generation of kids ... now us adults.
Adventurers in D&D run around trying to kill dragons. Anne McCaffrey's heroes and heroines tamed, befriended and rode the dragons.
That still smells like deep-fried awesome, even now. RIP, Anne. I'm only sorry I never got to meet you.
