Animals?

I wouldnt know, but it should be easy to stat them with the creature creation rules in the MGT Core, just wikipedia the animal, check its weight and what its diet and habitat is, then go from there

Can anyone tell me if a book of ordinary Earth-type animals statted for Traveller exists anywhere?

Thanks!

As in named for Terran critters? I vaguely recall one somewhere at some time. Possibly just a fan offering on the net. But that is the best I can remember which isn't much help.

Wasn't there a third party Animal Encounters pdf supplement for MgT? Again the memory is vague.

All I'm certain of off-hand is CT Supplement 2 - Animal Encounters and that doesn't name the critters or restrict them to specific worlds but provides full generic encounter tables with stats for all world and environment types. Broken down by Small, Medium, and Large worlds for Thin, Standard, and Dense atmospheres for each terrain type (Clear, Prairie, Rough, Broken, Mountain, Forest, Jungle, River, Swamp, Marsh, and Desert. Plus encounters for Oceans, Arctic, and Vacuum. Though Vacuum is more events, no vacuum critters ;) and just one vacuum plant (hey, it's sci-fi, they should have had vacuum critters too :) )

There was an OGL product for Fantasy Creatures statted for MGT, but nothing for Real Animals that I am aware of.

The only problem with statting real animals, IMHO, is determining the natural weapons damage and the armour rating.

So, for a GOAT (Mass = 100 kg). How much damage do the horns do? How much armour does a Hippo have?

Does a Lion attack with Teeth or Teeth and Claws? How much damage?

You get the idea.

Jon Brazen Enterprises has a collection of creatures for Traveller up at DriveThruRPG. Priced well too.

Many thanks for the responses. Yes, was hoping that someone somewhere had produced a "named for Terran critters". With Chthonian Stars being set just in our system I thought it would be nice if someone had already worked out ordinary Earth beasties.

Hmm, goes off to look at S&P schedule to see if he an fit something along these lines in the magazine...

PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I would like to see animals that would reasonably be transported by humans to other worlds/systems.

We aren't going to transport polar bears (probably), but will likely bring cows, dogs, horses, goats, lamas, mosquitos etc...

THANKS!!!!!!!!

That would be excellent :D

And yes, mostly animals which would be used for colonisation.

Though a few entries such as big cat pouncer, predator fish and so on would be nice too.

It occurs to me that if nobody has done these, someone who wants them might find that it encourages others if they were to pick one or two and do them, perhaps for Signs and Portents or Freelance Traveller, or even just to share on the forums...

I wouldnt mind doing one, perhaps more depending on how I find it. Shouldnt be too hard, I did it with xenomorphs, an RL animal should be fine!

Never one to back down from an intellectual challenge, I present the following:

COW:
Herbivore/Grazer/Walker
Str: 11 (+1)
Dex: 8 (+0)
End: 10 (+1)
Int: 0 (-3)
Inst: 6 (+0) = This is Instinct
Pack: 5 (-1)
Mass: 400 KG
Number: 2d6
Weapons: None
Armour: 1
Skills: Athletics (Endurance) 1, Recon 1, Survival 0

SHEEP:
Str: 12 (+2)
Dex: 10 (+1)
End: 11 (+1)
Int: 0 (-3)
Inst: 6 (+0)
Pack: 9 (+1)
Mass: 100 KG
Number 2d6
Weapons: None
Armour: 1
Skills: Athletics (Endurance) 1, Recon 2, Survival 0

How about that for a start?

You step off your ship into a hilly field... a strange sound is coming from over a small rise... suddenly, it appears... A Sheep!

Well, I figure Cows, Sheep, Pigs and Goats are probably going to be the most common food animals that we bring with us to the stars.

Dogs, Cats and Horses are probably going to be pretty common too.

Other animals, like Lamas, Donkeys/Mules, etc will be less common (maybe).

Pest animals like Rats, Mice and Cockroachs are also going to be common unfortunately.

Any other animals you think would be common among the stars?

I don't think so, unless you have ubiquitous space transport (tm).

If we have to use rockets and carefully balanced cargoes to get to the stars, then no unwanted guests will be going with them. They'll be cleaned out to save weight.
Rats and mice will still be popular as pets though, I have no doubt.

Heres a basic start for a pig/boar animal. Note below stats represent a more feral wild pig or boar. Farm pigs may follow more Herbivore style traits.

Pig
Size 7.
Str 3d6, Dex 3d6, End 7.
Omnivore walker (yes, pigs are omnivores, not herbivores), Eater (Endurance +4, Pack +2).

Weapon: Teeth (1d6 or 2d6 damage).
Armour: ?
Pack: 2d6+2 (4-14 - 1d6 to 4d6 pigs encountered)

And as long as space travel remains a 'big thing' with launches being small military/scientific equipment packages, with costs to orbit being ten thousand pounds per bloody kilo, there will be people making damn sure you're not hauling £3,500 of Rattus Rattus with you.

In the Third Imperium, ISO containers loaded with kilotons of goods (including industrial and agricultural products) flow off of and onto worlds every day, and at 275 KCr for an air/raft, access to orbit is sufficiently cheap that you're looking at people closer to White Van Man than NASA responsible for shipping it.

In that situation I think having rats, cockroaches and their alien analogues distributed throughout the stars is probably not as hard as we'd like to think.

Oh absolutely. I was just talking about nowadays really. As soon as we get cheap surface to orbit travel, we get pests in the stars. But when its rockets, no way.
