And so it begins.......

Mongoose

My Hawkwood fleet box, cleaned, trimmed, base holes drilled out (recommend a 2mm drill bit) and ready to build.

Sorry for the poor quality, phone cameras only, main camera battery flat.

You can see the moulding nissues with the Malcolm, 3rd from top left, my replacement is coming soon thanks to Matthew.

Weather permitting, I'll assemble the few turrets and such that need doing and spray on the base coat tomorrow.

And this morning we have:

No difference you say? Take a closer look....

Despite the crappy resolution you should be able to see the hulls are together and the turrets are on, which is all the ship assembly this fleet box needs.

i hear the horsemen are saddling their mounts.....

Saddle up

Unfortunately it's a bit windy and damp to do any spraying today but it's supposed to get better later, so we'll see.

And now we're entering unknown territory, the first side has had it's first spray coat added.

Looks like it's gonna take 2 base coats, should I base one side twice or both sides once then do the second coat?

Be warned, LBH has applied paint to a miniature, do not be alarmed, stay in your homes, you will be safe.....

Consider doing a brush undercoat on the Malcolm, and practise the paint scheme on it?

I've already started spraying it, but ut seems fine, all the detail seems to be staying which surprised me given my haphazard spraying technique.

It's a bugger getting full coverage, hence the suggesting 2 coats thing.

1 hour, turn, respray then repeat whole thing for second coat.

LBH

Yeah - I saw you'd started spraying them just after I put that post up, lol - that's why I changed it.

Paint on a miniature is more than I've managed in a long while!

Hoping to change that soon though, some grumpy old so-and-so complained that I never use my own models the other day... ruddy cheek! Can't complain though, I made the old fella (affectionately known as 'grandad' after a fun cinema trip) pay for dinner and sneakily kept the change, fleet fund started!

PS - my turn to sort dinner next time mate ;)

Well the seoncd side is now sprayed one and as bit times, minor disaster with the larger ships, the paper and card they were on got caught by the wind and took off just as I moved to spray the fighters. all pieces retreived, nothing fell on the grass too much, minor touch up respray applied while paint still wet but still going to need a second coat.

Upside was, if that doesn't break off the turrets or hulls I glued on this morning, I doubt anything will.

I think the gods are against me painting though otherwise why isn't the wind dying down.

Examination and second coat, first side in an hour then

LBH

First half of the second coat just gone on, the smaller ships seem to have more trouble taking the paint, we'll see how it dries and once I do the second half of the second coat, should have everything packed away by 6 at 1 hour gaps, assuming the wind doesn't pick up again.

Irn-Bru bottles (the rarer glass ones) are good weights to keep the paper and card down.

LBH

Last part of the second coat just gone one.

Annoyingly a big bit of the first coat flaked off on the Vlad, must have stuck to the paint on the card below or something, have moved the Vlad and resprayed that patch, hopefully will show up less once the full paint job is done.

Still, leave it to dry till it gets dark or the rain comes, and I should have a nicely base coated fleet, photos to follow later.

LBH

Nicely done LBH - It's refreshing to see someone who has bought their own ships, rather than borrowing a mates (or nicking their change to fund the mini's, lol)

Seriously, I find it more enjoyable fielding a painted fleet, especially one I've painted myself, I'm sure you'll find the same.

Well the second coat is done now, a few minor spots where the paint flaked off but nothing serious, and I'm sure all flaws will get covered up by the main job

I think they look cool, but I'm not stopping there (unless the Shadows show their face in the Fading Suns universe) , unfortunately the easy time consuming bit is over, now I need to map out my colour and paint jobs and then get all frustrated when my reality doesn't shape upto the vision I had for them, may start a new thread for the next bit, maybe entitiled "The avalanche has already begun...."

LBH

Well on examination of the basecoated models, youcan just see in the photos above some untrimmed flash at the tail of the Wayfarers.

Unsure whether or not to trime it and paint like a tail fin or exhaust plume, or trim it and hope the paint job takes to the fresh exposed metal.

Like I said above I'll be starting another thread soon to discuss stage 2, design and production of my paint job for the fleet.

Thanks for all the support and advice, and keep it coming.

LBH

Trimmed the tail flash off the Wayfarers and resprayed the 'scars'.

Will need to do a quick check on what paint I have, I took hi res shots of the unpainted minis so I can consider what detail to paint which colour, but I'll be starting a new thread for that discussion.

Off to the cinema later, SuckerPunch awaits, apparently there are some women in it or something....;)
