Alternate Technomage Crafting XP

My technomage finally hit 5th level and will be able to get a Pinace soon. I have been looking forward to upgrading the crud out of the ship since I found out that the class gets them. The only problem with this is that the GM does not give experience normally in the campaign. He awards us a level every 4-6 sessions. It sort of depends on his mood and how quickly we advance. A very unreliable system.

I have been trying to come up with a good idea for how to work experience spent on crafting for some time. Since I have not come up with any brilliant ideas, I decided to post here and see what everyone thought. I would love to hear any suggestions.

My primary thought right now is to take 5-10% of the xp required to reach a level and allow that much to be freely spent on crafting. This would not impact the normal rate of leveling since it is so free form.

Example at 5%:
1 = 0xp
2 = 50xp
3 = 150 xp
4 = 300 xp
5 = 500 xp
6 = 750 xp
7 = 1,050 xp
8 = 1,400 xp ...

Example at 10%:
1 = 0 xp
2 = 100 xp
3 = 300 xp
4 = 600 xp
5 = 1,000 xp
6 = 1,500 xp
7 = 2,100 xp
8 = 2,800 xp ...

A second thought of mine was to say that we play an average of 5 sessions per level. I would use 20% of the xp gained in that level and then be one session behind the rest of the group.

Are there any GMs or players who have some input on what would be a fair and fun system? It's nice not to be tied to xp, able to level when appropriate for the story, but there are still systems within the game that tie me to xp.

Thanks all

there is a list in books that say

Get to B5 = 250 xp

and the way you RP your 'mage should be added and how you play out the sessions

I may have to push my pc's into doing something as they are sat on there a%% doing nothing getting the downandouts doing things they should be doing
