I'm curious as to why the number of points per term gained varies, from 6, to 5 to 10. What is the reasoning (if there is one)? (page 40 of MGT1)

Also, since my store's distributor (Alliance) doesn't seem to get any of the new Traveller version in stock, I am not able to acquire the new version. Does it contain the same, or similar alternate character generation system?

That I can't answer. In theory, 1st term Can be calculated, with background skills and basic training gaining six 0 level skills.
Subsequent terms you would gain 1-3 skills or in some cases characteristics, depending on the skill table rolled on, the event, promotion, etc.

As travelers get more skills and characteristics, it can be easier to survive and get bonuses from events. But then aging starts taking its toll at term 4 and things can get harder. It all depends on the careers chosen too.

The points are just an abstraction to make it quick and easy. I have no idea if there is a method to the madness..

Not yet. It was promised for the Traveller Companion, which hasn't been released yet, and frankly hasn't been talked about much lately.
