Aldershot Tourney Battle report

As defending champion I set out with Greg and his crew to do battle, hoping for a good breakfast, some fun games and lots of destruction – these were all achieved.

Given the Isds and my variety of fleets I decided to play a different one in each game – choosing each of the “misunderstood” races – Dilgar, Centauri and Shadows.

5pt Skirmish – Space Superiority

Game 1 – I played as Dilgar – 1 Garaosh (5 Thoruns, 5 Torp bombers), 1 Ochlavtia Command Destroyer, 3 Jashakra torp frigates and 1 Jashakar Scout. All but 1 Torp Frigate start in a Pentacon.

Vs Vree – 2 Vaarl Scout saucers, 1 Xeel Carrier, 2 Xixx torp saucers.

There was limited terrain and my opponent decided to await my approach behind the safety of one Asteroid field in the corner of the table. By the 4th turn my Pentacon, fighters and lone Torp Frigate had reached the edge of the field. The fighters and 1 frigate were ordered to flush them out and as the fighters raced through the rocks the Frigate cruised round the edge to engage the Carrier. Although the Vree fighters defended their craft they were too few to prevent several topr bombers hammering into one Torp saucer, causing heavy damage. The Xeel was pounded by the Frigate and lost its guns. In return the Firgate was heavily damaged. The Vree emerged en masse trying to get behind the Dilgar pentacon whilst the damage frigate swept round the other side of the asteroid field. The Vree continued to win the fighter war through the rest of the game but were quickly whittled down as the pentacon of frigates chased them round the asteroid field. The Garaosh was finally killed by the but the last saucer was destroyed by long range torp fire and only the Dilgar remained.
Loses – 1 Garaosh, all fighters, 1 Jashakar Torp Frigate
Kills – Vree Fleet
The Vree hardly scored any good criticals and whilst they won the fighter war – the ship war was eventually lost (we went to the full 12 turns) through attrition. The +1 Command gave me a 3pt Initiative advantage which proved extremely important in the pivotal turns as I could fire first with the whole pentacon.

A good victory and start to my campaign

5 pt Raid – Planetfall
Game 2 – Centauri (ah my Glorious Republic)
Primus (2 Sentri), Balvarin (4 Sentri, 4 Razik), Vorchan, Vorchan, Maximus, Kutai, 2 Rutarian,
Vs Earth – Omega, Avenger, 2 Artemis, 2 Olympus,

Despite a significant Initiative advanatge, I seemed to keep losing the roll – this was however pretty much the only luck Paul had in the whole game. Both fleets advanced towards the central planet with my Maximus maintaining a defensive posture in the centre. The Omega opened the hostilities at the pair of Squadroned Vorchan who had swept ahead of the fleet and scored a minor beam hit. In reply the Vorochans inflicted light damage on one Olympus who had moved forwards ahead of the other EA ships. Both fleets carriers hung back and launched fighters which swept towards the central battlefild. The Third turn was where the game was won. A huge fighter furball erupted but the Maximus assisted in keeping the Centuari fighters ahead. The Omega again fired first and its beam glanced off the armour of the Centauri ship with minimal damage (this time it fired at the Primus) but the Primus unleashed a nasty beam hit on its opposite number ( a 6,5 crit) and vaporised one of the Olympus, damaging the other. The remaining Olympus did manage to penetrate the borrowed inteceptors of the maximus and hurt the Vorchan but the two replied and again damaged both the Omega, casting it adrift and also destroyed the last Olympus. The next turn would decide if Paul could retrieve anything. Fighters again clashed as the two Artemis swept into the centre of the field – desperate to try and retrieve the situation. The Omega fired its beam and all front guns at the Kutai (only viable target) and barely scratched it. The lead Artemis had suffered damage from the two Rutarian but still managed to unleash its railguns at the Primus to very little effect which replied with a devastating hail of fire – crushing the small ship, before tearing the Omega apart for good measure. The remaining Vorchan had swept round to engage the Avenger and began to batter away at its defences. Paul (unsurprisingly) conceded with 1 lightly damaged Avenger and 1 battered Artemis remaining- also being outnumbered in fighters. He had hardly scored a crit in the game and those shots that had hit had often been dinks
Loses – 1 Vorchan
Kills – The Earth fleet

Another victory put me a in a strong third place behind Ken and Burger (who were fighting it out as I went an old friend – Digger!

5pt Battle– First one to die loses
Game three
Shadows (my beloved children of Darkness)
Young Ship, Stalker, 4 Scouts
Vs Narn
G’Vrahn (worrying), G’Quan( A Relief), 2 Var’nic, 2 Thentus, G’Karith

With virtually no terrain apart from an asteroid field in each other corner and a dust cloud in my corner deployment zone I knew I would have to be very careful to avoid the beams of the Narn ships. I have lost a number of previous games with Shadows by not being careful enough and was determined I would not do it again. Despite the Narn not being the best match up for the Ancient race (and bemoaning my not playing Centauri for our usual match up), Digger gamely began to advance on my ships. I scattered one scout down one edge and Stalker and Scout down the other edge – seeking to draw his ships off to the sides whilst advancing just into range of one of the Var’nics with my Shadow Ship. I was caught a little off guard as Digger all powered his G’Vrahn just into range of my ship and set up a beam shot on it. The Shadow ship crippled the Varnic and braced itself for the Narn return fire with its shields being stripped by a L/R emine hit. The beam sliced into the tough hull of the Ship and burned out part of its momentum generating bio engines but failed to pin it. This would be the only Narn beam shot in the game!!!!
I pulled the ship back behind the cloud to regenerate and await a easier target and continued to use the lesser ships to draw out the Narn. The 2nd Var’nic chased the a Scout around the asteroid field and was ambushed by the Stalker – inflicting light damage and causing little more than the Stalkers shields to drop in return. The fourth turn was when I won. As varied Narn ships charged in different directions, I positioned the Shadow Ship so it could target a Thentus without being fired in return and cut it half – the ships numbers were now even and with my Initiative advantage I could more easily dictate the battle. The next few turns saw a Narn ship killed each turn with no real response – despite Digger trying very hard to try and get at my ships – but SM and stealth robbed him of any real damage dealing chances. The Narn fleet was picked apart and by the time the two Capital ships reached the Shadow Ship which was dodging in and around the dust cloud they were on their own. Carefully I manoeuvred my ships and began to chop them apart, sending the G’Vrahn adrift and hammering the G’Quan. Digger achieved a kill (a flight of Shaodw fighters) and then conceded with no effectively way to deal damage, surrounded by Shadow vessels and plenty of time left.
Loses – 1 fighter flight
Kills – Narn fleet.

Digger tried hard but chasing Shadows is hard and difficult for such a fleet. As ever the G’Quan was a liability and achieved previously nothing (2 more Var’nics would have be nastier).Another big victory and this put me suddenly well out in front as Ken and Burger hammered each others fleets into oblivion.

The tournament was based on the difference of Victory points, this victory with no loses gave me an unassailable lead and another tournament victory - - Nice :D

My thanks to Neil for organising, all my opponents and everyone there on the day for a most enjoyable day and most importantly Ken for getting us there with speed and precision and with time for breakfast.

Despite winning 3 times with total annihilations, I managed to come second! Can I just say for the record. "I was robbed"? :)

Game 1, my Dilgar vs Greg's Minbari, I did feel a little evil with a could of 19 torpedofighters killing a Tigara before it even fired, and mopping up the 3 Torotha's shortly afterwards. Greg did cripple one of my scouts though. A whitewash, 75-2 VPs!

Game 2, Shadows vs Alex's Narn, it was fairly even at the start with one G'Karith and one Scout dying. But with the e-mines gone and the scouts getting mostly in rear and side arcs, the rest of the Narns died. A respectable 65-10 VPs.

Game 3, Kenny's Vree, were really nasty. One of his basestars killed my carrier before it managed to fire a shot, taking an unlaunched scout with it. Then it was a complete bloodbath, raiders dying all over the place and almost the entire Vree fighter cloud dying in one turn to secondary weapons. All the Drakh died except the mothership and one last light raider, I just about managed to kill the last big Vree thingy in the last turn. But all those given-away VPs, I only won by 10VP earned me 2nd place overall... booo!

Great day out rabbits, as usual. Shame we didn't see young Jim, but always nice to see Neil and Burger... well, maybe not Burger anymore
My first game was against Digger, who had expressed a desire to test his mettle against me, and was obliged by our organizer Neil.
I had Vree - 2 Xixx, 2 Xeel & 2 Ximm
Digger had Dilgar - 2 Garasoch & 2 Scout
With a ton of terrain on the board, I was feeling reasonably confident... then I saw the horde of Torpedo Thoruns leap halfway across the table and another wave being launched from the twin carriers
However, with my squadron'd Xixx succeeding in CAF orders on the lead Garasoch, Digger was introduced to 8AD of TD/P/SAP missile fire... 7 of these hit home and the single Thorun that had taken up Interceptor duty died on the very first roll... with criticals taking the damage into the 40's, that was one carrier crippled.
The 8 Tzymms were vastly outnumbered by the Thoruns, but they made a suitable nuisance of themselves (backed up by the 2 Ximm Escort ships) to kill about 3 Dilgar for every one I lost... Unfortunately, with Diggers best rolls coming for the Fleet Carrier, about two thirds of the destroyed fighters returned to fight again!
With numerical superiority and SM capable ships, I managed to dance around the Garasoch front arcs and kept pecking away at them until the job was done. Digger did manage to get some Thoruns around a Ximm and used their long range weapons to kill it off, but this was the only points he managed to pick up.
It was a fun game, and Digger took his lesson well :P so much so, that he treated me to a roll at the cafe opposite the game store :D Cheers again fella, we'll have to try and arrange the rematch at Charles' in the new year...

Game 2 was against Andy (Shutuphippie)
My fleet was the same as previous game, but I added a Vaarl scout and a Xaak Battle ship.
Andy's Shadows consisted of a Stalker and three Scouts.
We won't go into too much detail for this one as I don't wish to cause Andy further embarsassment  the combination of Tzymms and Torpedoes was too much firepower for even the Shadows to soak up and it was another big chunk of VPs for the Vree... sorry chap

I was standing in 2nd place at this time, with Burger ahead by about a dozen points and Charles about 20 points behind me... it could still go anyone's way... Or so I thought!

Last Game against Mark (Burger)
My fleet = Z'Takk, Z'Trikk, Xill, vaarl & 2 Ximm
Burger's Drakh = 1 Amu & 1 Ma'Cu carrying 1 Light Cruiser, 1 Fast Destroyer, 3 Hvy Raider, 2 Light Raider & a Scout
As Burger has said, there were plenty of casualties on both sides, and we were - unbeknowst to us at the time - playing right into Charles' hands
I think that my big mistake was to go after the smaller ships with my Fighters. Burger had chosen to have Crit protection instead of GEG on his 2 starting ships and I really should have used the ridiculous amount of AD that 12 Tzymms can bring to bear (48 TL + 36 AP TL dice) on the Amu... the fighters would still have been blitzed by the guns on the Amu, but at Hull 4 and no GEG, the Armageddon ship would have still taken a shed load of damage... probably :?
Still a close game, and jolly good fun.

As I said before, a great day out, and three good opponents... ACTA still lives... Sort of :D

Firstly, A big 'Thank-you' to Neil for organising a great day, looking forward to the next one.

Game 1 - Dilgar vs. Vree - I was smashed to bits! I now also hate the Vree - Well done Ken, a very enjoyable game, great sportsmanship and a great lesson in tactics.

Game 2 - Narn vs. Narn - Again I was ripped apart this time by an almost identical fleet - Another great game and exercise in how not to play ACTA - Humbling!

Game 3 - Narn vs. Shadows - Not a chance! Da Boss kicked ass and took names! Having said that, I really enjoyed the game and even managed a kill (a fighter flight!). Well done Charles - I can see a rematch coming up in the new year!

Overall, it's back to the drawing board for the Narn Regime!

Very enjoyable day, but travelling back was horrible, the weather was as crap as my tactics! :D

I was relishing the opportunity to try out my new Minbari, sadly they did not perform well.

Game 1, vs Burger. Two Garasochs and a horde of torpedo fighters made mincemeat of my Tigara and Torothas.

Game 2 vs Neil. Two Tinashis and an Ashinta, vs my Tinashi, Ashinta, Tigara, and 2 Torothas. I've face Niel's Tinashi beam team before and I was glad to get my revenge. Minbari vs Minbari is odd, because there is lots of non-shooting. My Tinashi got to fire its beam once and missed. I have come to the conclusion the Minbari battleship is over-rated.

Game 3, vs shutuphippie. His Shadow fleet hid in the corner behind a dust cloud. Rather than play a waiting game, I charged straight across the board and gathered my fleet to suge through the asteroid field en mass. I got in one good round of shooting before his fleet's manueverability allowed him to take me apart piecemeal.

Despite losing, I had a great time. Thanks to Neil for organising the event.

Guys,

Got back from Aldershot around 10ish - not bad run considering the weather was utterly filthy.

A big thankyou to TGT for organising an excellent tournie - it was my first visit to the shop at Aldershot and have to admit to being very impressed with facilities.

Also big Thankyou to the following for some great games

Game 1: Paul - EA Early years clash of the Olympuses Vs Hyperions. Overall a very tactical game and a well fought draw by both parties

Game 2: Kennyboy - I HATE VREE! I HATE VREE! I HATE VREE (saying it outloud three times seems to help somehow). It's always a pleasure playing Kennyboy as Ken as ever was at his playful and infectious best. He also dished out another damn good thrashing to my pesky shadows. Next time kenny - please use some lube - I am gonna be sore from this shafting for some time.

Game 3: Greg - once again another fun tactical game.... that is of course if tactical means an entire shadow fleet hiding behind a dust cloud in a big girlie huddle waiting until the mimbo's enter 8 inch scout range. First time I have ever played Greg dispite meeting and seeing him at countless Mongoose days over the years. Really enjoyed the game and hopefully will be able to have a rematch next time we all meet up.

Final tally: Drew one, utterly humilated in one, and won one

Final position: 5th out of 10
Looking forward to seeing you all i@ the next tournie n the new year at Northants -

Catch ya later

Sounds like a good time...

Sad that the Brits have such a strong affinity for B5 and Im all alone in AZ with my thumb up my butt.

 :?

Thanks to all for attending!
I'd like to organise another Tourney for April next year.
It'll probably be one Sunday early on in the month.
details to follow.
I may even make it a team event rather than a straight up one on one.
Lots of time before hand to come up with some idea's.
cheers
TGT

You can sign me up for this!

Looking forward to it, although I think the Narns may have to take a rest for this one!

Sounding better all the time. I'll have to check my itenerary (read: budget) and see if I can make this thing happen. It would be great to throw dice with some of you folks in person. And a fine excuse to cross the pond!
