Air power in VaS:

The group I play against use a set of aircraft rules I came up with. Basically the love child of V@S's aircraft rules and those of Starmada's fighter rules. Gives better results in terms of aircraft being a factor but tends to creak if there is more than 10 squadrons on the board.

I find that VaS tends to be more of a surface combat game, aircraft can be a factor in large numbers, but as long as you have ships on the table your aircraft won't prove to be an effective defence against a strong surface force. You'd need to go all aircraft to make it worth while.

That's the problem we had!!

Ebar, could you pm me the rules you use and how you combine them with VaS? If it's not too much trouble. Okie

Hi there

for us the rules in OOB work just fine. An attack of 3 flights of "Kates" or "Vales" blows anything from cruiser on downwards right out of the water. Bigger ships take more runs, but a seriously hurt when attacked properly with airpower, i.e. no single flights but massed attacks to suppress AA.

The problem would in my opinion be rather the fact that table sizes tend to be rather small, so a carrier force catched by BB will be hurt as you won't be able to keep out of shooting distance and still remain on the table. Battle point system gives you the choice between carriers or BB, mixing both is with 3-5 points battles rather difficult. So your air superiority and attrition by bombers need more time than big hits from the main turrets of the BB. If you're able to stay out of harms way with the carriers, a BB force has no chance against a carrier force using OOB rules.

I'm not sure about that. There are som AA cruisers that throw up a LOT of flak and make great escorts for the BBs. Not to mention the rule that you can now use secondaries on many ships as additional AA guns helps a lot.

Might be interesting to try out sometime. A 5 point battle fleet. One side has to buy at least 3 carriers. Carriers are to be kept off board. All returning flights of planes must be off the table for 2 full turns to represent their long flight times.

Be interesting to see if the planes ran out before the BBs and escorts did.

I agree this would be an interesting experiment, and one I will try next time I play. It would almost be a pity if it did work out...all those nice looking carriers that have to stay off the table!

Peace
