Advise?

JMISBEST

Mongoose
Hi guys I want some advise for a friend who is soon to be moving to Scotland for a year or 2. Here is what he wants to know/advise for/on/about

1st off he has A Traveller Character that is highly racist towards people of different ethnics and colours and wants advise on how to best Roleplay his character with his soon-to-be new group when none of them know him and at least 2 of the other 4 players and the assistant GM fit into 1 of those categories

The 2nd is that he is A Veteran Traveller GM and a good Pirates Of Drinax GM, but he has never been a full-time player before and hasn't been a player full-stop in just under 5.4 years and wants advise on how not to let his vast knowledge of the rules and campaign spoil it for him.

Can you please give me advise to give to my friends. PS No offense meant in the 1st question, I just can't remember what the legal name/term is, so I decided to take a educated guess and hope for the best. Sorry for any accidental upset

That's simple: DON'T DO IT.
- Don't bring your old, experienced character from your old campaign over to the new group. Make a new character.
AND
- Don't play "problematic" characters with players who don't know you and you don't know them. Play a simple, easy, group compatible character - he can develop "depth" later during the campaign.

In my eyes, there are two critical questions that every new player has to answer:
1) Why does your character want to join the other characters?
2) Why should the other characters let your character join them?
If there are no answers that satisfy each player -> don't play this character.

Shut up and play. Every Traveller Universe is different (even if they are interpretations of the OTU). Be open minded. Explore the universe the referee provides, and don't complain.

Pretty much agree with above post, sums it up.

Always best to feel out a group before diving in with both feet and never getting an invite again. Not to say obnoxious PCs aren't fun, but only if used in context and used well.

This playing a difficult antisocial character is a really terrible idea. The whole point of playing a game like this is to get along with other people and in Traveller you have loads of other races. Wanting to play a character like that is silly and a bit strange. Seriously forget that idea and play someone nice and friendly. There are enough actual idiots in the real world without bringing them into games that we play for entertainment.

I second (3rd, 4th) this. From bitter experience I have had players play 'problem' characters to make things more interesting. Gameplay stops and sessions end up being about trying to get around the problem player. In two campaigns the solution was the same. The players killed the problem character, end of problem. Make a new character with links to the players.
