Advice to "Newbie" Looking for Game?

I wandered into a game store last week and picked up a copy of the core rule book. This was half-whimsy, half-nostalgia. Definitely got a thrill paging through the book and revisiting the Traveller universe, as I grew up on pulp sci-fi & space opera, and played classic Traveller back in high school (30 years ago now, unfortuantely).

The thing is, while I still do some board gaming with friends but I haven't played any PnP RPGs as an adult, either IRL or on line. Any advice on how to find a decent game to try and join as a rookie? I was figuring there must be on line groups, and Google certainly turns up some RP-focused web sites but I'm feeling a bit out of my depth on which are the best ones, what the expectations would be for players, or how how to spot a decently laid-back, mature group I might work well with.

Depends on where you live. Hopefully you live near a large town or city. College town is a bonus.
I found a lot of gamers on a meetup group. Google meetup groups for your area and look for rpgs. You can also advertise on a meetup group or even craigslist. You might get lucking and live in the same area as somebody on these boards.

Don't forget to check the player locater thread to see if anyone here on these forums lives nearby.
