Admirals

Hi @ all
I am new to this forum and to ACTA (got my books yesterday). Me and some of my friends read about this game and wanted to try it out. I have a question about admirals. If I play a five point Raid game and want to have an admiral, the ship will become a Battle level ship. My guess is that the ship has still to be a Raid level ship (not a Battle level choice), right ? Does an admiral cost something ? On Armageddon the ship he is on also costs an additional Battle point. Do I have to pay for the "upgrade" to Battle level (2 Raid points for a Raid level ship with an admiral ) ?

hi, and welcome to the forums,
i havent used one yet but i guess you would have to count the ship as battle level because of the admiral and that also is its cost, i.e the upgrade in pl

If you park the admiral on a raid ship, it becomes a battle ship, yes. If you park him on a battle ship, it becomes a war ship, and so on. Personally I don't think it's worth it, since he has to have the highest PL ship anyway, so in a 5 raid game as Centauri, if you fielded a Primus or Dargan at battle level he'd have to be on there, and it would cost four of your five points, becoming a war level ship.

I think the rule is to try to avoid powerful admirals of tiny ships - hwoever I would like to try the following variant on the rule:

Any fleet of at least 5 Fleet Allocation points in size may include a single Admiral to lead it. He is placed on one ship and will raise its Priority Level by one, so a Raid level ship will become a Battle level ship, a Battle level ship will become a War level ship, and so on. An Armageddon level ship will take both an Armageddon level slot and a Battle level slot. An Admiral must be placed on a ship with the Command trait or the highest Priority Level ship in the fleet (before the ship’s Priority Level is increased by the presence of the Admiral).

hmm I thought it was an intesting fix but not sure about if it is fair for all fleets - but interested in reaction

Command Ships

EA - Raid +
Dilgar - Skirmish +
Minbari have to wait till Battle
Narn also have to wait till battle
Centauri - raid+
ISA - have to wait for War - but could get lower with a Ally
Abbai - have no got one ! (could make a Milani variant)
Brakiri - Raid+
Drazi - Skirmish +
Gaim - have not got one (hmm)
Pakmara - have not got one
Vree - not got one till battle

It's still a useful option, even if it means you don't have to double the cost of a war-level ship. Still worth using, and command variants can be added for other races down the line.

I can't see many situations where gaining an admiral is worth doubling the cost of a ship, especialy if it's the largest ship in your fleet.

well some people do play with for instance all Raid ships or similar - however it was the having to use the largest ship always that I invented the above idea - any thoughts on it? :)

To be perfectly honest, I think I'd rather have more ships over the one super-ship.
So few of the admiral traits do much for the entire fleet. Mostly, it's just the one single ship.

Perhaps substitute highest PL Queen in the fleet for the Gaim.
