As the originator of the topic, I ought to talk about what I prefer and have.
I have large Fed and Klingon fleets (75+ ships combined), and have growing Gorn and Rom fleets (intend to expand each fleet them to about the low-20s numberwise). I envision having a small Kzinti contingent (7-8 ships) so I can at least include them in scenarios, but they are a minor Empire to me at this point. I just don't really like the looks of the ships very much. I proposed some changes that would have made them more interesting, but was overruled. I might expand their fleet if and when carriers/fighters come into the game.
Orions, not loving them right now. I like the looks of the ships, but the current rules for option mounts leave me a little well, bleh. While flying a phaser-boat may be "efficient", it doesn't make for an interesting battle to me. There's currently little incentive to use other weapon choices besides phasers and maybe drones in the option mounts. When that changes, I might be more inclined to try them out.
