Depending on the science, whatever waves you're detecting might go through the engines to reflect or collect through the sensors, or they could be designed to pick up stuff from behind as well as in front, its sci-fi, doesnt have to make perfect sense!


I love your ship btw, I don't know what any of these scouts are really supposed to look like but I always love to see a good conversion.

I like the concept a lot, much more than the dish setup.

Have you thought of ways in which each fleet would have its own type of array, to show how the technology might be pursued by one empire over another?

(In the case of the Romulans, they could maybe use the Klingon standard for the Kestrels - and thus feeding into the known logistical problems they have with the KR fleet - while using some alternative "home-grown" setup for the Eagles and Hawks instead.)

If you are familiar with the technical details of the "Hawk" ships from SFB, they use replacable "modules" to change from a ship from one varient to another (on the 'Hawk class cruisers the modules are represented by those raised rectangular areas on the wings of the hull, on the 'Hawk class destroyers they are the large central panel in on the dorsal surface of the hull).

To be true to this idea, any "scout" modifications would need to be limited to changes on these modules. It could be as simple as painting them different colors or you could attach some flat antenna pannels to the module area(s) or even due some more complex extended arrays that stick up from the module.

I've got a Skyhawk and a Sparrowhawk that I plan to make up as scouts as soon as I get the time. For the Skyhawks-F I was going to file down the panel detail on the dorsal module and then attach a couple of small squares of plasticard to represent antenna arrays. For the Sparrowhawk-C I may do the same thing on the wing modules, although I have not decided for sure yet.
