[ACTA:SF] Anyone else having yellowing problems with resin?

I just received a Rom Squadron box yesterday, and I was surprised to see that the KC9R (C8) resin mini is heavily yellowed.

I have some original resin Fed minis (Fed Squadron box) that are all yellowing. I cannot recall if I washed the resin minis from that box or not.

But seeing the effect right out of the box is disconcerting. I placed the yellowing mini right next to a Rom Condor from a Fleet box that I picked up a few weeks ago. BIG difference.

Is there any way to stop the yellowing process, or whiten up the mini? And is this also going to bleed through the primer/paint and ruin the mini? I have some resin Klingons that you cannot see the yellowing on, but on an white Fed it's obvious. Being as I am painting the Roms light grey, I am concerned about this.

Not to sound silly or anything, but we use yellow (well cream) resin now, not white. It helps us trap QC problems as they are far more visible than on pure white models.

Ah, well that explains it then. Will the color stay the same and not get darker?

I had better use grey primer then, and not white to be on the safe side.

I have quite a few of the early resin Feds painted and am not seeing any bleed through on my very light gray ships (Vallejo Silver Gray) that are pushing 9-10 months with paint.

Unfortunately the yellowing of the Fed ships does not photograph well, but you can look at mine at Cold Wars... :lol:

Well working in the industry as a chief of production and doing most of the resin casting, resin will change color after long time exposed to direct sunlight. We did a test if our resin would bent, melt or have other of the problem "fineCast" was renowned for. So we build a resin model, out of spare parts, and put in on the window over the summer to see what woud happen and aside from discoloration... nothing really. Also since they are now using a colored resin, different batch will probably have a slight diference in tone, if they add the colorant manually. Even in the same batch if we go enough day without using it, it wil be a lighter tone, since the colorant will start to slowly settle at the botom of the jug.

All that to say... it is normal to have slight shift in color when buying resin mini, and yes the material might change color over time and no it's not likely to affect paint over primer. Unless the curing process wasn't done properly but that should not ever be out of ANY shop anyway as it is almost imposible NOT to spot.
