ACTA RIP....

We (B5 gamers) will sink back into obscurity like the void after AOG`s game went down and wait for the next insurgence in what, 10 - 15 years?

Maybe it's standard British pessimism, but that's pretty much what I expect... :?

Heh, imagine the feeling in a backwater (game wise) country like Belgium, where you need to resort to mail order unless you want to be ripped off where you stand.

Its easy, you drown it in your cheap (compared to the UK), fine quality beers, and move on

Every friday, every friday... I can foresee what our club discussion will be this friday hehe

I agree - If it ain't making money, bin it!

Mongoose are not a charity, they are in it to make a living and pay the mortgage.

I don't like it, but I understand - I will buy the miniatures I need at the reduced price. I am not going to give up on the game.

If new ships come along, I'll make a counter for it - Simple!

No, they shouldn't do charity, but imagine how alle the distributors and retailers think about it all now sitting with a stock of ACTA miniatures that is absolutely wort zit! Those distributors and retailers might not want to put any trust in MG's next big hype... Yeah, a great big stock of useless minis is expensive...

Well, this essentially, as others have said, sounds the complete death-knell for ACTA... rules support to the contrary, miniatures form a key component of the game... at some point, players want to be able to purchase, (and sometimes even!) paint and convert their models, to take that step beyond counters.

If you have a tabletop wargame like ACTA with absolutely no model production in the pipeline, how do you attract new players? I know I played with proxies and counters before I bought models, but in the end, I did indeed buy models. A big part of the reason why I chose the Fleet I did was because I liked the models. Now there will be no more models... and as such, no new players, and in the end, that's all she wrote.

I can only hope Mongoose has some sort of alternative method or route planned to create models for ACTA, otherwise ACTA will essentially be dead. Guess we'll see a massive influx of B5 models on Ebay. Would Games Workshop games be as popular as they if there was absolutely no model production? Just a requirement for fan-produced counters? No.

Further, what are players, new or old, supposed to think? The game seems to be going great, all sorts of future plans, then one day, seemingly out of the blue, we get this... "We're dropping model production." Destroys customer confidence in a product, and definitely destroys any favorable perception new players might have had. Who wants to buy models for a dying game, let alone one that is -dead-?

ACTA RIP indeed... what a shock. Things seemed to be going so well.

"Augh, the game might be dying because they've stopped producing miniatures for it! Quick, everyone stop playing so we can ensure its death!"

Where the frack is the logic in that??

Come on, people, bad news doesn't kill a game, players abandoning it because of the bad news kills a game. I, for one, will continue playing using the ships I have, thus, ensuring the game doesn't die for me.

To be fair to Matt et al, this story only broke here because WC posted about an email Mongoose sent to LGS etc. MGP might have wanted to break the news to the "faithful" some what differently, but then again it would have been somewhat naive to expect it not to leak!

Regards,

Dave

They *did* send the frontpage thingie today as well through their mailer group (the one I also quoted a few pages back)

Must say, at 15.19 I got an Msprange email (the group), at 15.20, my boss better could stay away for me for I wanted to punch something...

You missed where everyone's said how it's going to be impossible to get new players without models? There's a gaming club of ~30 bodies in Derby. One of them plays ACtA. I've been meaning to go down there and try to help him drum up some interest, but how much do you think we'll be able to achieve now? "Here, play this game that has no model line and nowhere to get models except second hand stuff from e-bay!" Why is anyone going to spend their gaming budget on that when they can buy into 40K or Warhammer Fantasty or dozens of other games that have long-term support?

Sure, I can get the odd game with Triggy and this one bloke at the club, but otherwise what chance is there? Unless Mongoose comes back and tells us they've got models being made elsewhere or someone else buys the license, I and people in my place and screwed.

But alas no models in future means no new players(atleast in sufficient amount) into game which means game will end up dead. Has happened in past, will happen in future. It's inevitable :( Game NEEDS new blood to replace old players who quit but without models on sale new blood won't come in sufficient numbers.

It might not be fast death but eventually game will be one where only few die-hard fans will be playing it in small groups and the more it heads toward that the harder it will be for new players to join=cycle speeds up.

Just look at the number of quality games that are pretty much dead. That's what happened to them.

New players are not required for a game with a solid rules structure and dedicated players.

If the "old blood" doesn't quit at the first sign of trouble, then there's no demand to get "new blood" into the game. Play with the miniatures you have. If you've got multiple fleets, sell some off to new players. Use counters! New players are more apt to join a game if the "buy in" cost is low, anyway.

People tend to just hear bad news and claim the sky is falling without giving any sort of thought to actually keep the sky from falling. It's pathetic.
