ACTA old school

Renny

Mongoose
Hi

I haven't posted on these boards in a long time.

I was wondering whether anyone is still playing ACTA out of the box, just using the original release of the game?

I bought ACTA the first week it came out and for over a year we played it to death. Got through a major tournament in our group, played every couple of weeks (some of us every week) and loved it. We did versions of the game for running Star Trek, and WW II naval battles (predating Victory At Sea). We also ran a tournament at Gencon last year.
The mighty Digger is one of our playing group, and needless to say, he's still playing the game to a very high standard.

Speaking for myself, though, i've become disenchanted with the whole thing because I see a game now that I barely recognise. I'm afraid to organise a game because i've got no idea which fleet list to use and the whole thing has become a chore rather than a pleasure.

I'm not trying to bash Mongoose, this is just my own opinion. Frankly, I wish it was otherwise because at one time I thought ACTA was the best game i'd ever played. Now I can barely bring myself to visit these forums.
I've even considerd putting the box set on ebay as I don't know if i'll play it again.
So it occurred to me that I may just go back and play the game as it was originally released and see if that game is still the classic I thought it was when it first came out.
Has anyone else tried this?

Regards

Renny

Hi Renny.

I have the first edition box set and the then available extra counter sheet - only! That's all I have and as I have little to no friends that are into Tabletop space battles, I have put it to little use, so the thought of getting a Sky Full Of Stars supplement crossed my mind but I never distributed the resources away from other games I did actually ran to get a copy. But I still cling to my box, someday a friend of mine will come around and we'll once again blast our counters through space. Keep the box, especially because it's an original 1st edition one. Don't part with stuff that has given you so many good gaming hours in the past, regardless of the fact if it will do so again. The $ you'll earn will soon be spent, but the box will be gone forever. Don't do it!

Just my advice :) Go play the game as you did back then and have fun again!

Hi Cut

Thanks man. That's good advice. Kind of echoes my own feelings, I suppose.

Never ending rants on what is and isn't broken perhaps?

Constant revisions and calls for thereof?

Cannot think why anyone would get disenchanted at all

Hey Phil, how's it going?

That about sums it up. There's an element of burn out in my apathy, I suppose. We played a hell of a lot of the game. But, I never really thought the game was that broken. And despite all the revisions and arguing about the rules, if you read these boards it appears the game is still broken in one way or another.

The problem with it now is if I want to turn up at a tournament or at an event like Salute, and play ACTA, I have to check which of the four-odd versions of the rules I need to be playing with. I'm afraid that it's become too high maintenance for me.

I know the game needs to evolve but I sometimes wonder whether Mongoose listens to the players a little too closely.

This train of thought is also giving me pause before buying into Victory At Sea. If I buy the game, is it going to go through the same sort of rapid revision. At the moment i'm still on the fence as to whether I want to get into that.

Or that people just love to whine :p . Regardless of what there is always complaints. Human nature I suppose.

More or less the same sentiments as myself Renny. Having committed a fair amount of time and money to ACTA by now i'll keep up with the rules updates for the fleets that i regularly play. But i've had my fingers burned with ACTA and i don't think i will ever be persuaded to get into any of mongoose's other games.

I am in the same boat as well. I don't to play much, due to family and job reasons. I am stoping at SFOS on my purchases, might ask for Amargdeon as a christmas present but I not going out of my way. I got burnt out on all Ship stat revisions. I had made my quick look up sheets for everyone and by the time I got them updated a new source book was coming out. But I will still play the game when I get a chance (I believe it is a very fun game) but I won't put much more money into it. I will buy some more "Icon" ships from each race, but i dought I will do any fleet building.

Jon

BTW I have a new domain and I am put all my game aids and hobbie file all on one webpage page. Once it is done I will let everyone know.

Guys, you can always play revision 'X' rather then the latest revision at home, Mongoose does not control the product all the way to your games room :?

Only if you have like minded opponents though....

well its something you have to prearrange, if its a tourney you can set it in the rules. The recent Gaelcon tourney, used a recent set of tourney rules not used by others. But I see what you mean, if people are not going to agree, you are gonna find yourself stuck.

Hey SQ

Hope things pick up for you.
Hopefully all of us Gencon vets will get to meet up again sometime soon, maybe playing Star Wars Starship Battles...

:D That was a joke, BTW :D

I'm kinda in the same boat as Renny (Hi Renny!) in that I got the game when it first came out, was wowed by how cool it was and played it for a while but then was unable to get anyone else around here to play it and no one seemed interested in it, so I put it aside for a while.

Now after meeting the MI guy for the state, and seeing that people actually play and have regular dates/times for playing, I am interested in getting back in and I find that there is the first set, the revised versuion, SFoS, and now Armaggedon, not to mention the tournament lists, and that the ships change almost weekly and that most of the time it's not really for the better, but a tweak just seemingly for tweak's sake.

I know I can just play with what I have, but if I want to play with others, I've got to play what they are playing. It seems like a daunting task. I'm looking at spring here before heading down to play so that gives me the winter to build models and read rule books and ask questions so that I can show up prepared. It just is frustrating that the ships are tweaked so often and that each new book changes so many things, like the Warlock moving up a PL.

I can appreciate that the rules and stats are sort of a "living" set of documents, but if the moving target would just sop for a little while so I can get back aboard the train, that would be ideal :) (Yes, it really IS all about me in the end!) ;)

Don't lose hope, Renny, I'm sure you can jump back in. It'll just take a little while to move back from the kiddie pool to the deep end :)

(And all these rules changes highlight how woefully out of date my Trek mod is, Argh!)

Matthew Sprange himself has often said "Play to the rules you've got"

Exactly :)

Which is fine if everyone else is playing to the rules you've got.

Anyway, i'm not trying to change anyone's opinion. I might just see if I can resurrect my gaming group's interest in the game by running ACTA out of the original box again. If not, it was fun while it lasted.

Good luck to all

I have not given up hope that my gaming-lazy friends will join me for a game of my 1st edition ACTA anytime soon

Also the prospect of a possible german version might help me out here. I have played older versions of games and prefered some over newer stuff. Don't give your ACTAs box away.

Have you had a chance to ask your friends about an old school ACTA game yet?
