ACTA - I want, I hate, lets adjust

I think downgrades would be extremely risky, unless they were severely limited. Gamey players could just cash in the traits they don't use such as jump engines, atmospheric, and rear weapons.

I would say you cannot "downgrade" a ship only add to it. . You could not take a ship which is designed for Atmospheric Flight and take that away.

Also only have a limited amount of "Upgrades" to a ship. Only Traits / Troops can be modified this way. I would limit upgrades to a % of total Fleet Allocation Points. Otherwise Power Gaming types would break the system and destroy the game.

"Pimp My Frigate" :D

Yep agree only certain traits should be allowed as upgrades, such as Command, Escort, AF (or their 3E equivalents). Also shield points (but not regen), damage points, troops, fighters (more or upgrads).

Adding major things just seems silly. Stealth Explorer!

That seems all good - given that apparently its low AD game might be best to stay away from too much shield enhancements.

Balance will be tricky - but can be done as we saw from the evolving Space Station modular system - just as long as its not like the initial suggestion

Perhaps having different factions having different upgrades -- help keep the diversity of the factions. One of the things I love about B5:ACTA is that there's a huge difference playing a Gaim fleet or an Abbai fleet or a Dilgar fleet or a Minbari fleet or a Vree fleet... Upgrades shouldn't get rid of whatever makes a faction unique.

Maybe use a table for upgrades similar to the one for refits in campaigns now? +1AD to a weapon, +1 speed, limited stealth or +1 if already present, etc., the same upgrade not to be applied more than once. Downgrades could be similar but replace the + with -. This ties in with the suggestion that different fleets have different upgrades, the same way that different fleets have different refit tables now.

Downgrades could also be random. Upgrades are intentional and the captain can tell the engineers what he wants. Downgrades represent a ship which has already been in battle and taken some damage, and you can't tell the enemy gunners which systems you want removed. :)

There should certainly be a limit on how many points can be spent on upgrades. If not, I'm going to try to create the Chimera - not for any serious game, just for amusement.

Take a look at Planet Mongoose, 30/09/10. There's a preview of some of the criticals system, which appears to have followed suggestions made here earlier. Roll once for location, then the severity of the critical depends on a number of factors starting with how many criticals have already hit that location.

One of the locations is "Crew"...

None of the locations is the unrepairable "Vital Systems". Instead, when a location reaches critical level 6, it can't be repaired. Mind you, if Reactor reaches critical level 6, repair isn't an option anyway. :)

Love to say this was true, but we had this system up and running more than a year ago :)

It was indeed in the first draft of the <licence that I'm not going to mention> ACTA rules.

I'm currently figuring out which form of torture as feastured in the entire run of Spooks to use on you to get the information.

Actually scratch that, we'll just go straight to Mora'Dum

Awesome. Not only did you accept suggestions from the forum, you also used a time machine to get them.

Inadvisable. This rite is designed to prepare the student to withstand terror and to use it against an adversary. Using it for interrogation will merely make the victim immune and allow him to terrorise you.

I recommend beer-boarding. This is similar to water-boarding except that it involves beer and it is poured into and over you, not the victim - he's only allowed to join in after he tells you what you want to know.

So when will we know? Is this out before Christmas?
According to Planet Mongoose, the plan is for a preview in November's S&P and an introductory Open Day in January.

Well only a month away till we find out what it is.

Well, from Matts comment that the ships in this game have small crews it cant be star wars and probably isnt star trek. Trek was the only thing i was hoping for cause I like it and would have liked to see the next generation stuff in a game. So like others I will probably buy the rules and use what I like in the current B5 game or do a conversion. But I probably wont be buying models.

he's already ruled both of those out previously. It's probably a considerably smaller licence than any of those or B5, he has never said it's a TV or movie licence, anything big would surely have leaked out. I can't see the owners of Stargate letting it be announced in S+P, so it's something less prominent in peoples minds? could be a comic book even, meaning half of us will have no idea what it is lol.

It likely wouldn't have been Star Trek anyway... Wizkids has a license for multiple Star Trek games including a semi/non collectible starship combat game that they announced at Gen Con Indy this year.

Matthew mentioned that movement is going to be unchanged. So I guess there's no chance of incorporating a 3-Dimensional aspect? That's the one thing that's kept me from ever really getting in to space combat games. 2-D space combat makes no sense to me.

Even something as simple as "elevation dice" and the ability to roll would be phenomenal.
