In all the time playing the game since its inception, this never came up, but just recently it did. In the rules, it states that ships may not fire into or through any terrain unless stated otherwise in the rules. (I'm going from the basic rules as I don't recall seeing the rule anywhere in Armageddon or SfoS. That and my books aren't in front of me at the moment...)
Since the rules for asteroids state nothing to the contrary, it is presumed that a ship in the asteroid field can't be shot at.
However, it never says that the ship can't fire back. Common sense and balance would tell us that the ship would not be able to and this is how we ruled it, but is it possible for a ship hiding in an asteroid field able to shoot out of it with impunity?
