A word for Bryan Steele: Brylukas

Hi Bryan,

Planning to include Brylukas in an adventure, I was re reading The Road of Eagles and found the description in the novel doesn't match at all the one given in the Bestiary.

In the Bestiary, Brylukas are listed as solitary, but there are swarms of them in the novel.
In the Bestiary, they're supposed to have wings, but they don't in the novel.
In the Bestiary, they get immunity against physical damage and 11 HD (that's tough!), while in the novel they are slashed by the dozen by Conan and the other characters.

All this differences make a completely different monster. The description in the Bestiary looks like more the Bat Demon of Roy Thomas Devil Wings Over Shadizar story.

Was it a mistake that escaped proofreading or a decision to make them completely different? Either way, does anyone one have stats for "real" Brylukas?

Thanks

I must have missed the Howard version in my researching, because I went with the Lovecraftian Brylukas bat-demon...hence why it is so different and really, really scary.

If it clashes with a Howard-ism for your game, I would call it by something different then. It was an intentional choice to use the Cthulhoid name for the creature, but an accidental oversight about the Howard version you spoke of. :)

Many apologies, I hope I can be forgiven on the merit that the rest of the Bestiary is so frickin' gnarly. ;)

No worries, Bryan. The Bestiary is still a must have!
I'll probably use your version as a demon-god-boss for my Brylukas. As for 'real' Brylukas (as they appear in The Road of Eagles or Savage Sword of Conan #38), I made some stats myself, keeping some of your ideas (as wounding). As I'm no master at all in D20 stuff, any comments are welcome:

Brylukas
Medium Outsider(Demon)

Str 16 (+3) Con 12 (+1) Wis 10 (+0)
Dex 18 (+4) Int 10 (+0) Cha 8 (-1)

Initiative: +12
Base Attack Bonus/Grapple: +2/+5
Attack: Claws +5 Melee (1d8+3) or Bite +5 Melee (1d10+3)
Special Attacks: Improved Grab, Wounding

Hit Points: 12 (2d8+1HD)
Dodge Defense: 16 (+4 Dex, +1 Natural, +1 Dodge); DR: 2
Saves: Fort +4, Ref +8, Will +3

Special Qualities: Darkvision 60ft

Skills: Climb +13, Hide +5, Jump +5, Listen +2, Move Silently +5, Spot +2
Feats: Dodge, Improved Initiative

Improved Grab: To use this ability, the brylukas must hit with a claw attack. If it gets a hold, it can start a grapple as a free action, doing automatic Bite damage each round.
Wounding: Any living creature damaged by a brylukas’ sharp claws or teeth continues to bleed due to the nature of the demon’s natural weaponry, losing 1 hit point per round thereafter. Multiple wounds do not result in cumulative bleeding, and a DC 10 Heal check or magical healing will stop the blood loss immediately.
Skills: Brylukas have a +8 racial bonus on Climb checks and can always choose to take 10 on Climb checks, even if rushed or threatened.

You're doing a great job on the Conan line (even though I was the one that found Lurking Terror "terrible"!). I can't wait till August to see Trial of Blood and Cities of Hyboria!

My talents are currently focussed elsewhere, but I think I have another Conan something on my later 2008 schedule if I remember correctly.

Thank you very much for hat tip, and I think your "lesser" Brylukas looks great! Go shear up som PCs with it right away!
