A request for August Hahn

August, as you are probably putting the finishing touches on The Book of the Magnakai, can you tell us if the Vakeros Warrior Mage gets Magi Magic in his repertoire? I lobbied to have it put in Heroes of Magnamund, but to no avail. However, perhaps it does make sense from a balance perspective to have the arts included in the magnakai levels.

Magi Magic ofcourse, refers to the battle spells like Splinter, Power Word, Invisible Fist, etc etc that Lone Wolf learns from Lord Rimoah and that Paido uses during the books. Not including Magi Magic as part of the Vakeros's repertoire will result in this part of the rpg material not adhering to canon.

Many thanks!

No worries and I am absolutely glad to reply!

BotM is already written, submitted and has been reviewed by Joe. One of the things we discussed was this very matter. Magi Magic as practiced by Paido is a gift that he and certain others among the Vakeros possess but _not_ common teaching. A lot of what is deemed 'canon' is really a matter of filling in blanks not covered by the only real sources of information, the game books and the Magnamund Companion.

One of the reasons we put these books out is to add to that lore and fill in some blanks ourselves. :)

That said, the Vakeros Warrior Mage does not get Magi Magic as part of his or her character class. I DO definitely approve of the idea of substituting in Magi Magic abilities on a one for one basis with the class's normal disciplines as this would certainly allow someone to play a character with that Magi 'spark'.

Hope this helps!

Thank you for your reply August. It's a bit of a letdown to be sure, but I can live with it, especially if its Joe Dever approved. After all, there are other changes from 'canon' that I am ok with, such as Brothers of the Crystal Star using Willpower instead of Endurance to power their spells.
However, I just might be houseruling Magi Magic abilities into my own games. :)

No worries at all!

In fact, if you do house-rule it, please post what you do here. I am sure there are other fans that would love to see it.

Take care,

Let me second this as well, always...always feel free to house-rule things. That's what makes roleplaying games SO great.

There are no rules set in stone.

NONE.

Talking about house rules, when are we seeing some rules on dual- and two-hand wielding? I have a set that I am using in my current game, but some GM's seem to be very resistant to the idea of adding anything.

I think that's house rule territory. Then you'll need subdual rules, and rulings on called shots, and alternate actions in combat, and before you know it the simple RP based rules light becomes a tactics manual when you hit combat.

Reminds me of one of my friend who said something similar: "With RPGs, there are no rules set in stones. Only swords."

Pretty much a paraphrasing of my favorite line in a Pendragon supplement:

"In Pendragon, the only thing set in stone is Excalibur."

YES! That's one of the best ones too.

Hey August, I've just seen that you're going to adapt "Darklands" to the new RPG, Congratulations! Will it be the same stuff as in the first Darklands (with provinces, Darklords, Helgedad), or will you rewrite many things (if of course you are allowed to answer to these questions ;-) )?

I just saw that on Mongoose's Lone Wolf page! Really happy to see such a revival in Lone Wolf. Really hoping that the Beastiary and Book of Magnakai would be released on schedule.

Hahn, will you be creating a Helghast character class as well? I recently submitted one to Nick, and posted it here as well: http://www.mongoosepublishing.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=45710&start=15

Some thoughts would be welcome - I never saw the original d20 Helghast, so I'm not sure how mine compares to it.

Greetings!

If the project goes as I think it will, this will be a rewriting of the original book, pulling it over into the new system, with additional material. There should be lots of reasons to pick this one up!

As for the Helghast, I can't say there will be a class for it, no. Yours looks fine and I see no reason to rewrite the wheel, so to speak. I can say for sure there will be new twists to the Darklands classes and at least one new one.

Just what that is, I can't say. Naar won't let me. :)
