A Funny Story About MRQ1 and MRQ II

Heres a funny one...

Ive always played Runequest, Chaosium versions II and III, (sort of), but bought and used MRQ as a source of ideas, stuff like Hero Points, the Gloranthan fluff too.

But, after a good while playing a house-ruled RQ3/BRP hybrid, (Glorantha 3rd age), I was thinking, maybe we should give this Mongoose game a go.

Heedless, we kind of converted over last November/December, mostly, but with still some house ruling (a new campaign, in fact, in 2nd age Ralios). Er, only to see MRQ II over the horizon. Im not mad keen on rules reading or learning. I guess I knew it was coming, but didnt see that it would totally supplant the Deluxe version in the forums and general support, etc.. Can we even still talk about the old version?

So, maybe my group need to take the plunge again, or revert back to our old ways, (hah! The old ways, theres a joke in there somewhere).

Thats my funny story. :)

I just wanted to know, how many of you guys are actually using MRQ II in actual play? How many of you have bought it but continue using your old set, or house rules? How many are eager to try it? How many of you prefer it? How many of you are staying put for the moment?

I'll probably be buying it, I know I will, but will I play it? Dunno.

I have the Core book for MRQ2 and many of the books for MRQ1. I plan to demo MRQ2 but I noticed that you only get the stats for Humans in the character generation section. There are many monsters in the back though.

I was looking for info to roll up a Duck character. Apparently they're in a future book or the recent Duck book (forget it's name) that I don't have need to be used. I'm a bit disappointed right now but I'm sure I'll be able to do it sometime soon.

I plan to get the MRQ2 books and replace my MRQ1 books as they become obsolete.

I had run MRQ for about two years and actually wrapped it up last year, with the intent of not getting back to it indefinitely; I had a variety of minor issues with it that collectively added up to a big cluster of problems, and I am not fond of heavy house-ruling plus my main group was now in to 4E.

Within the last few months a measure of dissatisfaction with 4E prompted me to look in to Pathfinder, which proved fun, albeit all that really happened was a bit of a schism between my game groups, with one favoring PF and the other 4E, but both playing both systems intermittently. Then I heard about RQ2.

I now have my rulebook in hand. My current scheme is to make RQ2 my main system from here on out; its a sublime, elegant system and very well written and presented; hard not to fall for, I feel, as I am very pleased to see that every oddity and issue I had before has been addressed and the improvements have exceeded expectations. I have buy-in already from one of my groups (who are all old RQ fans anyway) so I know I will be using it exclusively for a new campaign this year. About my only disappointment...and its very minor....is the rather modest bestiary in the main book (20 critters) but I can rely on older material until the Monster Coliseum arrives.

Uh, anyway the short answer is: RQ2 is sleek and smooth and so well-presented that I don't really even want to use my old books (and I have all prior editions of RQ in my collection).
