Hi Tankdriver! Have seen you post over on the ACTAs forum so thought I would drop a line here. As a veteran VaS player (Have played all of 2 games  ), I shall attempt to answer your questions but will surely be corrected soon:
We just came over from ATCA (still play but VaS has had our intereste for a while). What fleet are you guys playing? Carriers for you I bet?
Good Luck!

I actually just played my second game tonight. It went better than the first. In the first, four of us played a two-on-two "Battle of Denmark Straits" from the book. The Hood actually survived quite a while, but my Prine of Wales was left motionless from a crit on turn two and never moved after that. Well, it did move to the bottom of the sea, but otherwise no. A resounding vitory for the Germans.
Game 2: US(me) v German (brother in law Jonathan) v French (brother in law Raphael)
US starts in one corner with fleet consisting of 5 skirmish points, three cruisers, Portland x2, Pensacola, two Fletcher Destroyers and a Gato.
Opposite corner, three german surface ships, U-boats, all THREE of them no where to be seen.
Same side of table as the German, opposite corner, the French, with five skirmish class ships.
Turn One: Germans and US close as the french make the slow trek to the battle, thank god for a small table. Fire is exchanged in which one of the Portlands akes beating and NO hits are scored on the Germans. The French, with long range fire scratch a German or two.
Turn Two: All ships in range, still no hits by the Americans. he damaged portland is crippled and one of the subhunting fletchers gets tagged.
Turn Three: Things start to change. The Portland is lost, but the US starts hitting, including bringing the Gato out, well placed between both fleets. A German skirmish level ship sinks, thanks to the Americans. Score at the end of turn three- US 16, German 16, French 0.
Turn Four: The French get on the board pasting the crippled Fletcher. Overkill, there. The Americans rack up another German Surface ship, as his U-baots come visible. End of turn four score- US 32, Germany 16, French 8
Turn Five+: More of the same. German U-boats were initially well placed, but quickly out run. US sinks last of the surface ships for the Germans, and proceeds to whitle away at the french. Geman U-boats do manage to sink another US ship, but after a few turns, the US drops its fourth French ship to cannon fire. All told I had the Gato, a Portland and the Pensacola left. The German had three u-boats, but could not score enough points to take the lead once I had sunk the fourth French ship. The French were left with a single cruiser.
Not a bad night.
As for carriers and which fleet I intend to play, check the next post I put up.
