A Call to Arms: Painting Guide

So, since we don't have anything in PDF (or hard back), lets do this here! :D

I'm calling out to our wealthy stock of highly talented painters to help out. This thread is for posting step by step instructions to painting the ships of ACtA. We have a lot of very talented painters, I think it would be possible to put something together.

Please include:
  • - Basic setup and preparation. Anything you did additional to ready the model for painting that might influence how it is painted.

    - Paint types and colors

    - Step by Step instructions

    - Step by Step photographs, if possible. After all, these will help out more than anything when trying to understand what you are doing.

    - Techniques used, though you don't need to go into specifics, if we don't know what 'dry brushing' is we can find it somewhere else.

    - Any other tips or tricks you learned along the way. Maybe you figured out a simpler way to create a specific effect on a hull or a better way of highlighting some details.

Please limit this thread to actual instructions, we can keep the discussion elsewhere :)

Minbari and Centauri.

The Minbari are in their own issue, the Centauri are in issue 3.

Can we do something like that, with a handful of the authors we have kickin around here?

Back in College I was pretty handy with InDesign, did all the layouts for our weekly newspaper. Before that I ran the Gaming section at TheOneRing.net for three years. I'd love to write some articles again, and put together some guides.

Then do it and post it here. Build the guide here. Thats why I started this thread. Hopefully it will catch on and more will contribute. CJ started us off on the right foot there. Those are excellent guides. You don't have to link PDFs like he did, just posting images with information here works just as well.

I want to get something going that can work until (and even after) we have something official from mongoose. And if someone posts a race, feel free to post the same. No one does ships the same, and it is nice to see multiple different takes on the same idea. The spice of life and all.

I promised I'd do that Narn guide, I know tomorrow I am finishing a Tau army that I have been putting off, I have Monday and Wednesday off, so I am going to try and get the G'Vrahn primed and get it going.

I have a White Star Carrier and all its babies to paint and all sorts of "no really I'm not LBH" sorts of stuff sitting around.

I will do the Narn guide. Soon.

We'll see where that takes us.

Actually Hindsight I would love to see how you painted your excellent Whitestar, as well.

Also I have yet to see a Whitestar carrier that looked good, or lets say one that has overcome its inbuilt aesthetic handicaps - (I know you like a challenge and apologies to White Start Carrier owners everywhere, including me I have two to paint).

heh ok. I don't know what I want to do with it... but... yea. I could give that a shot today too.

Above all else, what I would really like to see, was a true gallery of ships, where if I am painting a Dag'Kar, I can pull up a gallery and see half a dozen Dag'Kar's painted by Studios, and by fans.

The ACTA offering on CoolMiniOrNot is real low. We ought to change that.

These are a couple of my Whitestars and a Carrier, I will be doing another carrier and gunship shortly

Please keep in mind, I want to keep this a Painting Guide. We already have a gallery for finished ships. Here is where the painters can go through step by step how they arrived at their final product, as well as including their tips and tricks and suggested paint colors

He is lucky all of his White Star bays weren't filled in.

This thing I got is so miss cast... it makes me sad to think about how the bad sculpt will make a good paint job look bad.

whoops. If you are interested in a photo guide and instructions for those ships then i can do that

Thats exactly what we are looking for here. Please try to include as much info as possible. I made note of several key items in my initial post

Can a mod come in and clean up this thread by deleting all the off topic chat and making the thread a sticky?

i'll second that, i'll do Vree and maybe Narn too, leave this thread tho, i'll edit it later. (once i get my camera back from nikon  )

could it be worthwhile starting another thread?

Sorry, I am working on a guide, I have just been swamped at work, new release of a product and a million things to do to promote it.
