I like what MGT has done with the Spinward Marches, but I think overall the that sector has been done to death thru them and other publishers.
From a time period standpoint, someone mentioned not wanting to do the past. I do not see how to avoid it. By staying in the past, MGT avoids the the potential Assassination and Virus fan rifts. Unless of course they do Heat Death of the Universe, which Marc Miller has blurbed, just a blurb, in some publications.

. The 3I will likely be not even a memory by then.
In the past, there are a few exciting times.
War of the Admirals could get you Core Sector, Which admiral will you support, will you ally with the one raiding your system for supplies, pressganging your crew?
Psionics in Year 0 or 800 - Marc Miller's Traveller in Milleu 0 had an entire supplement called Psionics Institutes. While Psionics was not clearly understood, they were sufficiently common enough that you could randomly roll for an Institute in each system, with a Institue UPP developed because there were prevelant enough. Hmm. A psionics campaign without nagging Zhos or Imps on your back. Sounds good to me.
Aslan Border Wars. Fightin' the furless pink skins and taking their land.
Still, I would like to stay close to Solomani and Terra. So I will settle for Gateway. Unless they have, as our former governor Blagoyavich once said, "testicular fortitude", to do an out and out Solomani Rim War campaign, not as the board game (which I have). OK so I'm ethnocentric speciesist. Think of me as Commander Kor from OST "Errand of Mercy".
"It would have been, glorious!"
