2nd book at the table?

We're about to embark on a 2e Traveller game. I'm not the referee, but I thought it would be handy to have a 2nd book at the table for when we need to look up things during the game. The "Explorer's Edition" indicates that it includes all the core rules, so it seems like a good, economical solution to that problem. Is that a reasonable choice?

Absolutely would agree with you - if you play in-person, then having an extra set of rulebook(s) for inactive players to peruse while the referee is working on something with another player's turn, is a good idea. Question is, do you fulfil that with the full Core Rulebook (CRB) or the Explorer Edition Rules (EER)?
The "Explorer's Edition" indicates that it includes all the core rules,
Not sure what that means - on the one hand, word-for-word, the EER are as good as the CRB but with omissions. The EER is good for looking-up Skills, Tasks and Combat, Encounters and Dangers and Spacecraft Operations IMO. However, character generation is missing alot of careers (only Scholar and Scout are provided in EER.) And alot of Equipment is missing, and so is the chapter on Psionics - if you plan to use those as players, then a second copy of the full CRB might be worth the extra.
Is that a reasonable choice?
If you wanted to introduce a newbie to Traveller while sat around the table for a cup of coffee; or if you wanted to provide players something to look at while they familiarise themselves with the game, then the EER are perhaps a good, affordable option with a good focus and presentation of the game material.

If you got the Core Rulebook from Mongoose, you get a free PDF with it.

If you have a tablet, you can put the PDF on the tablet and use that full Rulebook as a second book.
