Still not available from Esdevium...

Only because Esdevium have not updated thir releases for week commencing 9th April, probably because of the Easter holidays.

Both Leisure Games and Games Lore have it available next week.

Indeed, my FLGS phoned me today to check I wanted it as it is on the list this week, just we Joe Q Publics don't get to see it yet.....

Panic over, arrived yesterday and I now have a copy! On initial flick through it looks good, not sure of the table layouts, but that's not exactly a big problem.

Picked up my copy yesterday and have already skimmed through all of it and read much of it. I am very pleased with what I see so far and looking forward to reading the rest of the book.

I have been gaming and buying gaming materials since the late 1970's so things like minor spelling mistakes, font types and table layouts don't honestly matter one bit to me.

The way I evaluate the value of a gaming product goes something like this. As long as the content is:
1. accurate (which it seems to be),
2. I can understand the intent of how the rules and background information are meant to shape the world and gameplay (otherwise, how can I determine whether and what I need to house rule or throw out) and,
3. in the case of a rewrite of an existing game milieu, does the content stay true to or enhance the previous editions (which, based on my initial reading, the Mongoose edition very much does),
I am happy.

Incidently, I purchased - or lost and repurchased - everything GDW ever released regarding 2300 AD and I can honestly say that the quality of this Core Rulebook is miles above the quality of the 1st (Traveller: 2300) or 2nd Edition (2300 AD) produced by GDW.

Given the quality increase, coupled with the fact there is significantly more material in this book then in the original boxed set, I find this book to be well worth what I paid for it.

BTW, I live in Australia. Given the strength of the Australian dollar at the moment, I paid about $70 US for the hard cover, so I expected a lot based on the price and got more than I expected.

Nice (though I don't play 2300AD myself - always like to check out char sheets!).

P.S. - 'Character Sheet' at the bottom is all jumbled together - maybe need to embed font (or convert to outlines). Note: it may also be because I viewed using Preview on Mac (but haven't seen that happen before and I look at a lot of PDFs).

Thanks!

If anyone spots anything untoward let me know... Likewise if anyone has a suggestion for it or another sheet ????

Looks OK on PC. But it is close to the bottom and the sheet doesn't quite fit A4, I have a feeling there's some odd about that font... Fix later

Cheers Ian

Long time fan, own EVERYTHING ever published for 2300AD. I got my book yesterday, been reading it in spare time, and I do give it a definite thumbs up. :D

THE BAD

Artwork, appearance. More art would have been a big plus. Few illustrations for vehicles, equipment, etc. I'm assuming we will get more of this in future "gear" releases.

There are some errors here and there, but not enough to really complain about. On par with the other 2300AD stuff I have.

Sparse on gear. Only a sampling of vehicles and spacecraft. Again I'm assuming we will get more of these in future supplements like we did in the original 2300AD. I've already heard Colin speak of working on 30 vehicles for a future release, so I guess this is already answered.

THE GOOD

Huge amount of 2300AD material. Background, nations, worlds, etc are covered. The book weighs in at over 300 pages. Much of the material is stuff you wouldn't have got until later supplements if you were around for the initial 2300AD release.

Lots of original stuff if you are a Traveller fan but not necessarily a 2300AD fan. First off, talents, cybernetics, hacking, biological modifications, etc. If you are an old 2300AD fan, these don't spoil the setting, you still get the feel of 2300AD. Much is explained better then it was in for example the Earth/Cybertech sourcebook. Second, UP's for countries, colonies, etc are a definite plus for Traveller. I even found a few pages with details on tasks and travel times flying craft to and from orbit in detail. These are things that seemed to be left out or only slightly detailed in past incarnations of Traveller or 2300AD.

CLOSING (oops this sounded like a fanboy review, sorry)

I will be buying future supplements and not just because I have everything released before. For Traveller fans, this should be heralded as THE alternate setting for Mongoose Traveller. I just wish my Mong2300AD core book had the rules from MongTrav already inserted.

If you ordered it from Mongoose, let Matt Sprang know, and he'll fix it up. There was apparently a problem with the American warehouse.

There was. Blame the Star Fleet fans for clogging up everything with their orders :) However, everything is strasight now, and we are back to our normal fast turnarounds.

YAAAY! Got my book.

I have EVERYTHING ever printed for 2300AD from GDW, and now looking forward to putting many adventures together using the MGP rules system. And artwork. Maybe even a video or two...

Keep a watchin.

Just go my book and I have a question about character creation. Is the core citizen and frontier citizen two different careers? So if I wanted to roll a character that started out in the Core, then decided to move to one of the colonies later in life, would I be able to cash out the core citizen and then try to qualify for the frontier citizen career?

Core citizens and frontier citizens have different service skills and
different mustering out tables, which makes them different careers.

You'd handle that like any other career change. The reverse (frontier to core) might be more difficult if the character is DNA-modified, owing to 24th century prejudice in the Core.

Anxious for the release of French Arm! When is it coming out? Started doing my own write up using Colonial Atlas, 2320 and Mgp 2300. I have players who like to hide in planetoid belts so they keep me on my toes. They want to know the exact makeup of systems and planets. Hurry!!! The prairie wolves are scratching at the front door!!

Greetings

I decided to wait until I could see a copy in person before picking this up. However I was at the Valhalla wargame show in Farnborough UK today and there was a small Mongoose stand with a copy. So I perused it and purchased a copy.

I'm now aiming to sit down and have an initial read.

Regards

Edward
