Cracking render. I always thought the engine bells on the back were goofy, though. They'd get sheared off during re-entry. If you look at the shuttle, it has a big plate protecting the bottom of it's engine bells to guard against just such an occurance. IMHO it'd look much better with some vectored thrust ports, or a 2D aerospike engine across the back like the X-33:

Ok Wil, how's the stars looking now? :)

Still far too dim... the image doesn't seem to have updated at all though.

And sorry, I thought that you were the person who had been making all those original 2300AD covers.

It's not gamma correction (on my part at least), all the other pictures look fine to me.
As it is a rendered image, it probably lacks any gamma correction to a standard profile - making darker colors appear too dark to the human eye (simplified explanation). Not where I can adjust it properly, but simple autotune on Mac preview makes a huge difference (similar to a gamma correction, though more histogram based).

Your monitor may also account for gamma (and color temp) - that is different and global as is the color profile your OS may be applying.

Interesting choices of imagery. Reminds of an old topic that I can't remember where it was at about game styles and campaign themes in 2300AD. Seem mostly militaristic so far with a tad of otherness on top.

I am not surprised, I have always had the impression that
combat scenarios are the focus of almost 90 % of all cam-
paigns. As mentioned elsewhere, I suspect that "sense of
wonder" is usually understood as "I wonder how to kill it".

Its all about fantasy and adventure, which more often than not involve conflict. My PCs ship and crew can make loads of money just trading, but that's hardly fun.

While conflict is certainly a key element of a good
scenario, I am a little surprised that combat is of-
ten treated as the one and only way to resolve a
conflict. But, well, this is just me.

Hi,

These images are great. I especially like the Osprey image too.

On the other hand though, I kind of feel that the Halo image may be just a bit too high tech. I always liked how the powered armor/Walkers in 2300AD looked just a bit clunky as if they were still a bit early in the development of that technology, but the Halo guy to more looks super advanced and maybe more like what I might imagine for Traveller type Combat Armor or even Battle Dress.

Finally, while I really like the image of the ship's bridge it does seem to be much bigger in volume than some people may be assuming for their ships (though I haven't seen the new rules so I may be mistaken).

Regards

Pat

 Too true. I find the military stuff a bit boring and I have seen others express that too. Maybe it is just hard to find images that convey that troubleshooting character of the 2300AD that I remember? I mean, violence is of course an important part of the setting. But its does not always have to involve ICBMs and hover tank battalions?

Btw, agree on the Halo art. Not very 2300AD. Chunkiness is key to proper 2300AD tech IMHO.

yes, I would agree that powered armour is clunky in 2300AD but also I would say that 2300AD returns the ordinary solider as being the centre - albeit with lots of technology. For every illustration of the Kafer human conflict - it is shown Man-to-Man (Kafer) and small squads would rule. The only way to do that is to create some sort of powered armour maybe Halo is a tad to sophisticated in its capacity but it is essentially the future of human infantry.

The guiding principle for the artists I would say think of what we ought to have now but it is just on the edge - this would be commonplace and add to that a raw aesthetic as colonies would need to have things that they could easily manufacture themselves hence more mechanical rather than electronic. This I would say also applies to Traveller save the differences in tech make other tech more commonplace because we have different manufacturing capabilities in Traveller due to things like gravatics.
