100 ton challage

The way a 100 tonner works, the J drive goes from J2 to J4. The J2 works best as an early X-boat then, at the higher TL, the iconic X-boat becomes the norm. A J2 courier is still more efficient than larger J1 vessels of the same TL.

I'm considering a design for a pleasure boat. Something the young 'jet set' dilettante would rather tool around the galaxy rather in their parents' yacht.

Stealthed pirate ship.
A stealthed pirate ship with a single turret seems inherently problematic. Of course, if you added some armed drones or even a couple of fighters, it might be useful.

100 ton Cheap cargo design just use smallest JDrive, Mdrive, and PP and max out the cargo. Just use minimum crew and crew quarters makes good for solo play.

Just do not add passenger staterooms as then you need a steward. If you can bump it up in tech to make required components as small as you can, to max out cargo.

Freighters: Hundred Tons

Skimming through CotI wiki, I note that it isn't an original idea, though I suspect that in one case, it had a two-ton jay-one drive.

I would say a 100ton Cheap cargo design would be a good representation for a tramp freighter.
One pilot, one stateroom for him. I guess the A-Drive is the smallest so it would have Jump-2 and maneuver-2. If you like, you can dedicate some of that extra storage to extra fuel tank-age so you could make another Jump-2 without refueling.

Cargo: External

Not really a fan, but worth considering.

Problem is 100 tons is the minimum for a star ship. Any ship above 100 tons which is partially external cargo and not using the external cargo will use the drive engine rating proportional to its smaller frame. Can't do that with 100 tons. A 100t ton ship with 10 tons of external cargo will not jump with only the 90 ton main frame.

There are two approaches to that.

1. You build a set of modules, *knowing* that you need to bolt 100 dtons together to use the jump drive.

2. You have a 100 ton hull that includes external grapples for another 100 tons. Stripped down it remains a j2 ship. Any external baggage makes it a J1 ship.

Cargo: External

Ironically, I see it having more commercial uses, as the ship can deliver the cargo to the nearest space station, and collect the next cargo.

For private use, it's more a desperate measure, since handling becomes problematic if you have to enter an atmosphere.

Gypsy, You are right. Essentially, a 100ton ship can haul ship tonnages until their Thrust and/or Jump rating reaches 0. Remember that External Grapples, according to the rule book, are for transporting ships not cargo units. It seems they distinguish between clamps and detachable external holds. I do notice you calculate the construction of a ship with DEHs as if they are a permanent fixture of the ship. Technically, it should be feasible with the understanding a 100ton ship without its DEHs is unable to use its jump drives.

These instances for 100ton craft and DEHs make me picture interstellar package delivery services either as a government postal service or independents that serve the secondary systems off the X-boat mains. The holds are pre-loaded for carriers to switch out pods for the proper destinations.

I originally missed the Jumpcusser in Scoundrel, a 100ton pirate. With this particular sub topic and the stealth pirate ship earlier, it got me thinking about a 100 ton pirate specializing in grabbing small craft. Since I just conceived it, give me a day to design.
