I picked up a copy of 2e at Gen Con a week ago and have briefly read through it.
As far as I have seen there are no real changes from the AE rules, just a few more spells, combat manoeuvres and quick npc stats.
The tables are clearer and the combat chapter has all the relevent info...
I would suggest a small dose of full contact escrima , and/or a dash of non SCA western martial arts. Life threatening only in a case of bad luck, real weapons yes, and very insightful into the world of weaponspeed.
I found that giving each weapon a different attack progression scale based on size and weight and historical details of the weapons was the best and easiest way to show the difference in weapon speed.
I just added another column to the weapon lists with a progression number and my players...
The way I try to integrate a little more flavour into the combat is to give numerical bonuses or penalties to players who are "theatrical" in their descriptions of what their characters want to do for the round.

Its seems really tough to find players these days, I posted an email on this forum for conan players a while ago and did not get one reply. I am in Grand Rapids MI which obviously is too far away for a regular game but if you ever feel inclined you could drive the five hours for a Conan marathon...
