Questions: Need help with the Science of Science Fiction

My original thought was somewhat similar. You have the rosette, with the ringworld crossing the spaces between the planets. Of course, instead of stopping to make space for a world, it simply has a very sharp bend and does a semi-circle around the planet. As for the orbit... Alien...

Questions: Need help with the Science of Science Fiction

Sure it would work! Never said that the ringworld has to touch the planets of the rosette! SO you have five or so planets in a rosette and a ringworld built to the orbit size, with little pockets or dips in the ring world that allow the for the planets. If you get them close enough, then you...

    Vehicle Handbook - Now Shipping!

AH the age old arguement... Well, age old from what I can tell. IIRC, we have addressed this issue before with the old Civilian and Military Vehicles books. (also, please note that I don't have the new Vehicle Handbook... Something about being too poor...) The issue is this: People are taking a...

Navy: We’re 4 Years Away From Laser Guns on Ships

"Our informants for the Imperial Naval Design Liaison at the Unicorn Belt Shipyards R&D Department has informed us that the Imperial Navy is currently getting ready to test a new generation of Meson weaponry. When asked, the Navy confirmed this by explicitly denying it and stating that we are...

Navy: We’re 4 Years Away From Laser Guns on Ships

Nah, you just build a small fast boat with enough power for 2 or 3 lasers with a couple of the new rail guns for point defense (Oh, and maybe use them as sandcasters as well!), and send them out in droves.

    Altering combat lethality

Next thing you know, said person wearing reflec is wanting you to smoke him a kippper. Best start investing in rubber... He'll be back for breakfast.

    Red dwarves everywhere.

Huh. You know, that reminds me... We need tables for rolling up stellar classes for systems... On a tangent, my first thought on seeing the thread title was "Oh no, it's just like Rimmerworld..."

    Active scanners

Here's how I do it: 1) You have your transponder. All civilian ships have those active. It broadcasts your ship name and such. 2) If that's active, then why not have your sensors be active. It can get hard to find little pieces of debris in space on passives, and fixing damage is expensive. So...

LBB9 Library Data - not very good value is it?

Then pick up the PDF version, that's a lot more readable. And I find it to be useful, as it's full of background info on the OTU.

    Space Combat and Missiles

Explosions propagate poorly in space. Very poorly. It's more so about giving it time to get the engines up and acquire the target.

    Computer aids

IIRC, Marc Miller's lawyers have been aiming to bring the wrath of litigation down anybody who makes those. Something about overzealous copyright protection. (My dad once nearly fell afoul of them)
