Escape Pods (riffing off the other thread)

So, essentially a re-entry capable pod? Are they in Pioneer? I'm kinda reminded of the opening scenes in Ad Astra (I know that was high earth atmosphere and not LEO) .

Escape Pods (riffing off the other thread)

I think Escape Pods in Pioneer will be much less useful than escape pods in traveller. - no low beth/fast drug - very limited ability to rescue people in time. - extremely limited supplies on board or ways of making new ones. So, is being a Pioneer simply for the foolhardy?

Well, that's a month away so double-excited and the series will last two months ....so that brings us to the end of May....

What real use are escape pods?

I wonder what shape you'd be in after 100 years in a pod.

    Pioneer and For All Mankind

The trailer for S5 of For All Mankind dropped and it's streaming in a month. And damn am I ready for PIONEER now. And yeah, I absolutely will be dialing the clock forward.

On a matter of scale...the Sea is famously big. Obviously mostly in 2D and nowhere near the same scale. The point being....in most cases abandoning ship into a rubebr dinghy when you're 1000 miles from land is the measure of last resort. Same would be for anything escape-pod-like in space...

What real use are escape pods?

The changes to safety standards after the Fastnet disaster were considerable. The substantial debate comes in whether there is utility. Just like in sailing, an escape pod/life raft should be the absolute last resort. Space is much more hostile than the open sea. The chance of rescue more...

What do you mean the escape pods are painted dioramas? Someone went to the time to produce micro-dioramas and glue them to the window of the escape pod so that when we looked in we would see … a high end escape pod. But really it’s an escape pod for ants.

I really like the stateroom idea. Low berthers are already in “pods”. Stateroom can generate enough power for a long long time. And it reminds me of the modules in The Culture.

So those are possibilties which are ...possible. However it's a capitalist society so yes, your Free Trader was built by the lowest bidder and with the scale of the Imperium, it's entirely possible the design is commoditised. In fact, the generic parts would have to be commoditised in order to...

In SOME cases, a hole open to space also negates the artificial gravity. (Star Trek Into Darkness). Be careful out there. Your vessel was designed and constructed by the lowest bidder.

Ok, you made your point. No need to respond.

What real use are escape pods?

When I ran the Pioneer Playtest, for re-entry the target module was antirely auomated and, of course, that had failed. The PCs investigated broefly and found essentially an XBOX controller as a makeshift bridge control under a maintenance panel. no prizes for guessing that homage. Would...

It may be more limited than the ship at it's best but when your atmosphere has already vented. I know that; I didn't say melt-down. I said melting. The ship is on fire. A small attitude adjustment makes a big difference at 16,000 km/s.

It would be useful for manoeuver. youre travelling at 1,600 km/s, so let's have the onboard computer make sure you're not going to bump into anything (or perhaps not veer too far from regularly operated routes where you might be unrecoverable*) *Thinking of Pioneer here.
