VAS Campaign Map - in development

Here is an image of the campaign map I'm developing for a VAS campaign. Some Info The campaign system is called Struggle at Sea. The Campaign is based in WWII and pits the Kriegsmarine against the might of the royal navy. It will allow for two players (or teams of players) to re-create the...

    Ballistic penetration

It's kind of difficult to compare the ballistic penetration advantages of close range shots with the difference of armour between the Yamato and the Hood. Sort of like apples to oranges. I'm pretty sure that if the Hood pulled up alongside the Yamato at point blank range and started blasting she...

    Ballistic penetration

Sorry Joe, not to be daft or anything, but it seems to me like you're just spewing out a bunch of info and opinions. It almost looks like you are replying to a different thread altogether. As far as I can tell, you're saying that there should be no bonus to damage dice rolls at close range...

    Ballistic penetration

Sorry Joe. I'm not really sure what you are talking about here. What question are you refering to? This thread is pretty meaningless. There is already another thread dicussing this very same topic (must remember to read down a bit before starting a new thread).

How important is the size of the stand or counter?

Wow, I'm surprised Wulf. I'm using 1/2400 scale ships and my bases are smaller than yours. Especially for the subs. I only left about a 1/4" space from the ship model to the edge of the counter.

    Ballistic penetration

I think one of the big things that the VAS system misses out on is simulating the fact that naval shells strike with more hitting power at short ranges rather than long ranges. Do you think it's worth trying to add a damage dice modifier to the game based on range? I was thinking of maybe...

    Dreadnought era questions.

I have a few questions about WWI era ships. I could go digging for the answers online somewhere but I'm lazy and there seems to be quite a few knowledgable people lurking around these forums. 1) Many dreadnoughts featured case mounted secondary armaments, usually below the deck. As far as I can...

    Our house rules

I think the VAS system is a great set of light weight naval combat rules (which borders on the medium level). Like many others our gaming group began to have its own ideas about a few of the rules. This is a run down of the house rules that we have incorporated into our VAS games. The...

VaS and crossing the enemy's 'T' suggestion

One of our house rules is that if your line of fire crosses through another ship of the same size as the target (friendly or enemy) then you suffer a further -1 to hit. So if your T is crossed then not only will your firpower be limited to just your forward firing armament, but all of your ships...

Viewing Battleship memorials using Google Earth

Joe_Dracos: Your link goes to a picture of the Belfast in London. HMCS Haida is currently in Hamilton. It used to be moored in Toronto (at Ontario Place). If you look on google earth the ship actually appears in both places. Toronto...

does anyone play with 1/6000 ships?

This would be a good scale to do modern naval warfare in.

Battle Report - Battle of the River Plate

At the time of the Battle of the river Plate Cumberland was undergoing a refit in the Falkland Islands. She was hastily put to sea and steamed at full speed to reach Montevideo. Needless to say she wasn't in peak condition when she arrived on the scene. An easy way to represent a ship that is...

Battle Report - Battle of the River Plate

We'll probably fight this one out again in the future. If the Graf Spee manages to cripple or damage the British ships and then escape, it might be worthwhile to have a follow on scenario with the slightly damaged Cumberland reinforcing the British. For this particular battle there was no...

Battle Report - Battle of the River Plate

Not sure what battle I can run next. At the moment I only have these four ships. But I do have some destroyer models lying about (old axis and allies pieces). Perhaps I'll paint a few of them up and have another battle involving some light destroyer forces. Eventually, I'll order some more...

Battle Report - Battle of the River Plate

Seeing as I've finally got the three British and one German cruiser all painted up and based, I though it would be a good time to do a proper battle report. Please note that we use a modified version of the rules so you may see some strange things happening (like torpedo mounts being knocked out...
