I don't know about metal life forms but that has some interesting posibilities for life support and industry.
Drop some engineered packets of cells on mars and let them use sunlight to crack standing ice into free oxygen. Also posibilities for harvesting and refining chemicals and metal, again drop them on a source of low purity resource and let them work for a while.
