Why ACTA Flails.

Darzoni

Mongoose
Please don't misread my intentions here. I like ACTA and that's why I'm posting here. The purpose is to explain why I think ACTA isn't as popular as it could be.

It's all the changes in the ship stats. They're driving me up the wall because it's hard to keep track of "Well okay, which one is the most recent? Which version are we using?" This means I'm taking along a gazillion books to keep track of the fleet lists. It makes the cost of entry higher for new players as well, since they need the core books, Sky Full of Stars, and Armageddon to get things right. Even then it's easy to get confused by which rules apply.

Hopefully this changes with second edition.

<EDIT: Angry WHATYOUSHOULDDOISTHIS rant removed.>

... What the hell was I thinking? *goes looking for who let the angry cat out of the bag*

Basically I think that ACTA suffers from having too many rule changes too quickly, and that this is kind of a turn off to players. I also hope that 2nd Ed follows a "All the rules in one book" philosophy so we don't have the "Which ship stats do we use this week?" problem.

In terms of new material... well, Signs and Portents does a pretty good job at distributing new ships and stuff. Could always just release a new supplement when there's a critical mass of stuff to be printed or updated.

I understand your frustration! :)

We're all hopeful that the 2nd Edition will help stabilise stat and rules changes.
Hang in there!
There is Hope! 8)

I quite like the idea of stats cards available with updates available in Signs and Portents and in the ACtA download section so they can be cut and pasted over the old ships (onto card or even in the rules books).

Well actually, it has been a GF and roleplaying that keep me from doing anything for my tabletop minis.

But back on track, sure there have been many rule changes in a rather short time, but on the other hand ACTA is in its 1e currently, and what wargaming system has ever emerged in a perfectly playable condition.

Please don't arrogantly dismiss what the guy is saying - I happen to think he's right. Lots of potential players are put off the game when I explain the number of rule supplements and updates and the need to practically read the forums daily to see updates on rulemasters.

It doesn't put me off because I really like the game but it IS a real barrier to getting people interested and IT IS something that V2 is designed to address...

ACTA may do well for Mongoose but it has the potential to be a *lot* better and the principal drawback has to be quality control (typos) and unbalanced ships requiring quick adjustment...sorry, don't mean to offend anyone but it's true in my opinion.

Its a problem with some games...............Confrontation has a even worse problem with the sheer amount of FAQ and changes to the rules.

OK, newbie posting here. So take what I say with a grain of salt.

My hobby dollar is extrodinarily limited, as my income is quite simply crap. I got into ACTA after watching it at a local hobby store and thought it looked like fun.
I knew going in that the revised edition box set was already out of date, but I was still interested and bought it. I taught it to my small gaming group, that is my brothers in law and thier friends, and we had fun with the box set. I recently bought SFOS, even though I know Armeggeddon is out there. We now use ships from SFOS. I am still debating whether we should move to ARM or wait for 2e.

The point is, simply deciding, "OK, we play the box today," can keep everyone on the same level and keep costs down. The box set really is a complete game as it stands. In my opinion at least.

OK, newbie shuts up now before I offend someone again.

Yup.

You aren't FORCED to buy SFOS nor Armageddon without any possibility of otherway around. It depends a lot on what rest of the group uses. Albeit if you enter estabilished group with all then it gets harder but then again maybe they are kind enough to teach the differences and off you go again...

If OTOH you are small playing group then revised boxed set will do juuust fine. Atleast until you have more money.

Sure SFOS adds fancy new options and shining ships but as long as both players play on same rule set neither are really needed :-)

Would I be happy to get all in one rules? Yes. Why you think I'm so eager to get 2nd ed myself?-) I'm precisely on this situation(only worse. My rulebox is non-revised...). However I don't feel I should go around and buy all the rulebooks and pay lots of $$$ for them as I feel I can get around until 2nd ed comes. And I wouldn't recommend anybody starting up to instantly buy all 3...

Get revised box, get some games under your belt, start collecting nice fleet...At this point by the time you feel like you could do with those SFOS rules 2nd ed is already around the corner(now is march. B5 open day on august. Hints that release of 2nd ed is near there then. Time really flies as I have found out. It seems only yesterday I arrived to England first time :D).

IMO much better approach to start the game than worrying about(need to get revised set, SFOS AND armageddon?).

If 2e does hit the stores in August, it could be the way my wife could make up for the anniversary gift she is sure to forget.

Yep the newbie (hey you did use the word yourself ^^, sry) has it right.

No one forces you to buy a box. In a small group, start small. PLUS never forget, sometimes only a single person needs to buy the rules, the others can just borrow them, most rules are easy to remember. and to top it off MGP has allowed this perfectly nice playing tools, which also give you all the ship you need, at whatever lvl you need SFOS or Arma.

Yes it is true, there are many different "current" rules out. But then again that is hard to prevent. This isnt GW and 40k were talking about, an established company that has a huge game going for decades, but rather MGP and ACTA which means 1e just a few (albeit successful) years under the belt, with hoards of experiences to be made yet.

Yes i might seem like a fanboy (aint we all fanboys of B5?), but just let it have some time, and i guess itll be just a single rulebook, with maybe 1 or two extras. It needs at least a 2e. (Hech some games arent even stable in its 3e).

I wouldn't hold my breath for the August date. Release dates for ACTA are not engraved in stone.

True, but then it is just down to the fine art of reminding her of that at the right place and time, which could coinside (sp?) with the release of 2. edition.
Plans within plans

I cannot even remember what last year's gift was. I think it was permission to buy my new computer. Not that she contributed to the cost. I just counted it as a victory that I got to buy the thing. She got a RAM upgrade for her laptop.

ACTA was purchased after I secreted away money I got from her grandparents to SPLURGE on a birthday gift.
