Traveller is a great game and all, but I must say it has gone a long way in dumbing-down the layman referee's grasp of basic science, especially spaceflight.

I don't know. I think the State gov's dropping Physical science classes as a requirement starting in Jr. High has done more damage.

I think that a combination of a general lack of good science education, a growing tide of 'anti-science'/conspiracy theory nonsense being spread around, and the fact that any idiot can say something on the internet and have people believe what they say because they aren't taught how to think critically are the main reasons why people are lacking science knowledge. Generally speaking, at least.

Traveller itself isn't really a part of that, though I think it is true to say that it has propagated a lot of misconceptions about planets and stars and orbits among the people who play it.

That's true. The number of conspiracy nuts running amok on the interwebtubes is staggering. Logic, as a subject probably is no longer taught in High Schools either.
