What about aircraft????

I haven't seen any real mention yet anywhere of dive bombers and torpedo bombers.

I presume they are an important part of the rules, but have not been in anyone's battle reports, or lists or anything?

Can anyone elucidate further??

There are rules in the book for fighters, spotter planes, dive and torpedo bombers.

Italy's the only nation in the book that doesn't have any aircraft listed in it's fleet lists.

There are counters provided for the aircraft too.

Any clues on how they play?? i am interested in the mechanics.

If 1/3000th Navwar is the standard scale for ships, is anyone thinking of using 1/300th to 1/600th aircraft to represent the squadrons of torpedo bombers etc??

What happened to the M.C.205, M.C.202, and M.C.200 then?

Ho hum.... For aircraft I'm a huge (and biased, since I stock 'em as well as owning a bucketload....) fan of the 1/600 from Tumbling Dice; I'm planning on using Navwar ships with 1/600 aircraft, each aircraft representing a flight.

Dom,

Exactly what I am planning. Saw your name on the miniatures page. Do you have any pics of any of your 1/600th aircraft anywhere???

Dom,

I have joined the 1/600th aircraft group on yahoo. Found lots of great pics. I think the tumbling dice 1/600th models are deffinitely what I want. I suspect some other people on this forum will be interested as well.

I also found your doms decals site. I don't know if you want to answer the following questions here or with a pm?

Is there any difference from ordering TD 1/600th aircraft from you or direct from TD?

Like your decals, I shall be getting some japanese and US ones.

Do you sell the Micro Sol you mentioned, it looks very interesting and would potentially save postage if I bought it from you at same time as decals and TD aircraft?

I shall chance a reply - moderators please let me know if I'm committing an unforgivable breach of etiquette....

"Do you have any pics of any of your 1/600th aircraft anywhere???"

There are bare metal shots of most of the Tumbling Dice range on my website; www.domsdecals.com (Click on "product overview" at the top.)

Hopefully so; the sickeningly talented Agis has some lovely photos of his work using them and GHQ's 1/2400 ships.

Nothing major; I'm usually a little faster than Paul at filling orders but nothing too significant; until recently he didn't deal online, but now that he's up and running with Paypal there's no great difference really.

Sounds good.... :-) The whole decals thing actually only started out because I was such a big fan of the TD planes, and couldn't believe nobody made decals for 'em; it's just kind of snowballed from there.

No joy there I'm afraid; it's on my list of things I'd like to stock one day, but isn't viable at the moment. I'd recommend these guys: http://www.modelsforsale.com/catalog/product_info.php?pName=microscale--micro-sol-scale-30ml-date-new&cName=paints-glues-etc-glues-thinners-etc

Thanks for the reply. I don't think mongoose will object as they are only selling the rules.

Matt himself seems to encourage purchase of Navwar ships. Which I intend to buy.

I don't like tiny fighters though. With the B5 a call to arms game I normally use the large old AOG fighters, with one large fighter representing a flight.

Intend to do the same thing with the TD aircraft. I don't think you could easily get away with 1/300th aircraft with 1/3000 ships would look too wrong, but I am hoping 1/600th will just look right.

As the only Jap plane I know is the Zero, I have to work out what other aircraft were on aircraft carriers. Does anyone know what aircraft carrier, aircraft are stated for the Japs and the US in VAS?

The use of 1/600 or 1/700 (there are quite a few aircraft types available in this scale as well, made to tie in with the various plastic and resin ship kits in this scale) aircraft models is something of a "standard" for WW2 naval wargamers and, to a lesser extent, modern gamers too. The models look just right if they are mounted on flying stands. For my Pacific games I use 1" nails , hot-glued to pennies, heated up and stuck in the bottom of my 1/700 planes, then the bases sculped with filler and painted sea blue.

Statted carriers include (IIRC) the Yorktown and Essex class CVs for the US,

Aircraft are (IIRC) the Wildcat, Hellcat, Avenger, Dauntless, Devestator, Corsair, Helldiver,

For the Japanese the only carrier they get is the Shokaku. Aircraft types included are the Zero, Val, Kate and the George.

Thanks for the info,

I am a little surprised the japs only get one carrier, they were pretty big on carriers. Just skimming through a book on the japanese fleet I just bought and it listed war time losses.

11 battleships
25 carriers
cruisers were about the same 30 or so....

i.e. they lost as many carriers as cruisers and more than twice as many battleships.

Maybe we will get extra stats if VAS is a success, I feel it will be.

Thanks for info on the planes, I assume these were ones that the Shokaku carried, will investigate my purchases on these premises.

PS Who stocks 1/700th scale aircraft then??????

You can get 1/700 in model shops that stock 1/700 ships by Tamiya, Fujimi and the other japanese plakkie kit manufacturers. They are also available from White Ensign Models (who also do their own resin aircraft, but they are quite pricey). Skywave / Pitroad is another good company for 1/700 plastic aircraft.

Extraordinary they are too, separate undercarriage, bombs, etc the lot! They all seem to be produced on a limited basis though, best found through www.hlj.com, I've found, although so far I've been collecting for land combat, so I'm short of naval aircraft!

Trumpeter makes some nice US Navy sets in 1/700 scale with just enough decals in the box for all the planes and they're about $7 USD for 18 aircraft; maybe you can share with some friends!

They are made in this clear plastic that I've seen modelling guys paint the first coat greenish and then paint them in proper colors so that the greenish cockpit color shows through the canopy. Sickening really. but very nice when done 'right'. Alas, I am still trying...wow I think I used "alas" correctly.
